Our good friend Yvette Marchetti has been placing Wakarusa flyers into hip local publications. We think that this is a great idea and we wanted to share it with the rest of the team. Here are some pictures to illustrate this simple procedure:

1.) Start with some flyers. (Smiling while doing this is recommended :D)

2.) Grab a handful of papers and place a flyer in each one.

3.) Close paper and repeat. Be sure to place all the papers back in the machine.
There you have it! Yvette says that she's been doing this for years and has yet to run afoul of the long arm of the law (or the publishers for that matter) but please don't do anything out there that will get you into trouble.
Thanks again Yvette, you're really tearing it up out there for us!

yea, good idea if the u dont get caught.
not tryin to rain on anyones parade, but last show i helped promote that we did that, we got fined. it is illiegal technically... just saying b careful.
my fav trick is going to parties/shows and setting a bunch on the back of the toilet tank. works like a charm.

yeah i put a nice stack on the toilet tank at my local drinking house, and found them an hour later soaking in something mysteriously warm and stinky.
HERES A TIP, though. i've noticed that some of the less interested (or less intelligent) folks, are failing to notice the lineup on the back. so i am putting TWO stacks everywhere, side by side. one is stacked frontside-up, one is lineup side-up.
good luck

i also always put 2 stack one face up one face down when i lay them out.

A great place to put flyers for you college students is next to all the daily school newspapers....high traffic area...and because the flyers are so bright...sure to catch peoples eyes....also i have done what Yvette Marchetti has done put with the onion...i dont know if you guys are familiar with it but its a weekly publication that is actually all over the US...it started in Madison so here and chicago are the only 2 places in the US where it is free to anyone....anyways its a mock newspaper with funny articles making fun of politics and such. Its a great place to put them becuase everyone reads it! Keep on rocking on!

Question for you: Did you get caught inserting the flier or did the paper come back after the promoters when they found the inserts? I've always wondered about this and have been hesitant to try it. The publications have got to hate that considering they sell inserts like ad space.

We definitely do not want anybody doing anything that would get them into trouble. Use your best judgement on this one.

yea the paper found out sumhow..... and they contact the promoter of the local show and bitched pretty hardcore. the promoter settled withthem by paying them sum sort of ad fee... so yea, i would do it, but not here. tkae it ezkiddies

I wondered about the legalities to this. I did insert some in our local indie paper about a month ago, but you will not catch me doing it again. Granted it is a good idea, but not all good ideas are legal ideas  I also contact our local U and they said if I wanted to insert them, they would love to do it, but with a $ attached to the service!!!! Besides, I would rather put them in places where I feel it would be more worth it, like a record store or coffee house or go to a show and hand them out. I feel like the info is more likely to find a loving home there.

Personally I have never ever gotten in trouble for stuffen papers. There are cops all over Westport, they sometimes even come talk to me when I'm out doing this, I have been a promoter for so long I know most of the people around here, I don't know if that helps...but I have never been cuffed and taken to jail for any promoting I have ever done. And of coarse coffe shops and stuff are great places to put out fliers too, shows are wonderful to promote at, music stores, standing on street corners on the weekend in the local bar hoping area and giving them out, sticking them on cars, having other street teams and promoters help you out...what ever you are doing...at least you are doing it! Festivals like this would get no place if it was not for people out passing the word around town! Kudos to everyone!!!

Boulder CO gets the onion for free as well. Funny cause we say that ourselves and madison are the only ones, i wonder how many other only towns that publicate the onion there are :)

OKC gets it, I dont know if its for free or not. My friend Shawn is always bringing to our house. I think he gets it from the Evil Empire B&N!

here's a thought- take the story to your local newspaper editor. For example, a university newspaper, (or high school) or a local entertainment style newspaper. Just go in and ask for the editor. Get his email address and send him a press release. Click on \"press\" on the waka front page for article samples. (This was actually Sarajuana's idea, i can't take credit- I just run errands and drive for her.) :D
Definitely bringing handbills to a party is a good idea--it just gets old after awhile (i know most of the population of Fort Collin's kids that are interested in WAKA are going or torn btwn Waka and Telluride). Yvette and others definitely have a good idea, I just dont want to be intruding by doing that--as far as intrusion on the newsletters publication...Those of you who are HGMN reps, we should do that for our newsletters though! We can ask Chris Robie, perhaps he'll be ok w/ it.
ok peace out.
