Sarajuana and AJones6 will be hosting the kid's tent this year. There will be lots of activites such as yoga, hula hooping, arts and crafts, and all your basic \"run them around and drain all the energy out of them\" fun. If anyone has any suggestions on games, prizes, or has questions, leave them here, or PM Sarajuana or Ajones6 for more info. :D

We will definatly be stopping by with our six year old . How about a giant kid's painted mural or something along those lines? Kids can come up with some pretty far out stuff sometimes. She also loves hh ing. Maybe a 'make your own hula hoop', then we could have a kids hooper section for cheese??!!!??!!??

My wife and I are psyched on the whole Wakarusa gig. We're bringing our two 1/2 year old! Yipeee. May I suggest make your own instruments (maraccas, drums, etc) kid/parent sing-alongs, puppet shows, story time, finger painting.

'Make your own instruments' would be cool too!
My 11 year old girls might even get involved with that,
although at 11 they are too cool for most things!

Well, maybe the 11 year olds would like to work in the tent to help the younger ones. One year I made bead bracelets for the jazzfest to give away. The kids could make bead bracelets that say waka on them. Will the kids' tent be inside the music venue?

I am so pumped to hear all of your excitement in regards to the kids tent. I too believe that KIDS ROCK (sorry the silly pun). We have pretty much completed rounding up a great crew of volunteers, but we have not fully completed the curriculum as of yet. We are wishing to pretty much keep what is to come on the DL, but I will let you all know that we are planning instument making workshops with very special guests to help in that area. We also have some AWESOME school age activities planned through the help of KU's museum of Natural History. We will have musicians playing in this area, and we are working towards kid friendly sets. But, we are still looking for some great ideas to cater to our youngens (under 5). We already have some things scheduled, but we are open to change this early in the game. So mamas and papas, holla and let us know what you always have wanted to see in children's tents but have never experienced. We love unique ideas! Dont be afraid to share something different. Trust me-this is gonna be a children's tent like you have never seen before!

Children's tent is currently scheduled across from the general store, right by the coffee house. I think this is where the home grown tent was last year.

I remember you worked in a children's library, so I really anticipated you might have some ideas! Keep them coming mama! If you happen across any good books let me know and I will check them out, especially early childhood. Right now I have been referencing Earth Child by Kathryn Sheenan and Mary Waidner. Any of you earthy mamas and papas should check it out. It is a great book with \"games, stories, activities, experiments, & ideas about living lightly on planet earth\". It will be worth your time, even if you just look through it at Border's. It's full of info on respecting our Earth from different points of view, and it has lots of non-profits to get involved in with your children as well. I am considering the option of a donation box in the children's tent to adopt a piece of the rainforest in the name of Waka Kids-what do you all think of this? Keep your ideas coming!!!!

I really liked the idea of a daily kid mural. It could be all fingerpaint/handprint style- which may be easier and cheaper. Also, I'm donating 10 hula hoops for the kids to play with and we could have a giveaway on Sunday (cuz I don't wanna drag em home). We'll have hula workshop in the mornings, too. Looks like Sara and I will be there from 9-11am daily
ajones6
04-17-2005, 06:04 PM
We are going to be decorating hula hoops as one of the activites. The hulas themselves are taken care of. However, we need all different colors of tape. Rubbery tape works best. (Electrical) There is a website that has tons of colors, including metalic. Besides hula stuff, we still need other materials. If anyone would like to donate any kind of relevant supplies, leave a message here.

They could decorate bicycles. What about a juggling workshop hosted by some kind parents? I'll be buy working the fest, otherwise i'd volunteer.

One thing I forgot to tell you all is that we are trying to keep our budget as minimal as possible. Your ideas are flowing great and providing other ideas, but we need to also try to think about costs. If any of you all would like to donate anything, please pm me and I will keep in contact that way. We already have all of our volunteers, so we will not be looking for time donations. Keep your ideas coming-you guys do not understand how much you are helping us.

I had an idea about a nature walk around the lake/beach area. I remember when I was a kid, i was in campfire girls, and we made walking sticks with a poke-r at the end to pick up trash with. This way, we can learn about nature while also helping to keep Clinton Lake clean.

Hey SaraJuana & Ajones~
BIG hug to you all for organizing a kids tent. The kids will surely have a fab time being creative! I've planned (what seems like a zillion!) programs, storytimes and projects for toddlers to middle-school age kids through working at child-care centers, summer programs & children's dept. in a public library. I can give you some suggestions for books if you still need them. Just PM me & I'll do what I can to help you out!
One idea for a craft that I've done with different age groups is a nature pouch. They can be made from just about anything....felt, cloth, leather, fun foam, paper. The edges can be sewn together with yarn, string, plastic lacing, or twine, glued, or even stapled. Older kids can usually handle sewing the edges with a basic stitch, but it does help the younger group if holes are punched so they can lace the yarn through...similar to the lacing cards they play with. Add some decorations to the front, a string to hang from their neck & they have a snazzy pouch to collect all their Waka treasures!
ajones6
04-26-2005, 03:20 PM
Thank you so much for your kudos and info. I think nature pouches are a really cute idea! I doubt it would cost much if we used felt. We need all the suggestions we can get. We are currently trying to poll and see what ages will be attending, but we're not getting a response. I think a lot of parents dont have time to be on the forum, so we'll just have to guestimate. Bring on the suggestions. Thanks again

I was at the dollar tree and they have tons of bubbles and bubble wands...etc. It would be a really cheap way for some great kid fun! I was looking for a bubble blower that could be battery powered.
SaraJuana
05-09-2005, 10:29 AM
I think that we have all of our activities planned for the tent now. My \"hefe\", Jami, who is out of Lawrence, is my direct contact to the Waka crew. We pretty much have everything hammered out. Some of the ideas from you great parents and professionals have made it to the the idea board. Thanks for the great input!!! Please vote on the children's tent poll if you have not (and have children).
Alicia-I think WM has bubble guns-I bought one there for went went to the inaggural Bonneroo. Adults love them as well as children-they feel good on your face when they pop. Dont go for the cheap bubble guns at the $ store-they dont work worth a crap.

What's your deal with portapotties, JS? Do you have some weird facinaties with bodily fluids!
I was also at a party last week and they had this awesome bubble wand that was like 3 ft wide and made huge bubbles that last forever! Have you all seen these?
Jackstraw

Sara I fell in love in the portapottie line (thats from Keller Williams song Portapottie) the new one refers to my experience at WSP waiting to go to the bathroom in a civilized place for 30-45 minutes. I did meet this way cool beautiful lady in the line though
SaraJuana
05-09-2005, 03:31 PM
Sorry, I will be honest with you, I have not really gotten into Keller. But then again, I never had any real chances to see KW or have never had anyone give me a show to listen to.
As for peaking in the bathroom at WSP, that is something I can grasp. The time before last that they played the Brady (where they played last week the night I called you) I cannot believe I even remember that!
BTW-it was great to talk to you before the show. I actually ran across the guy you were at Dallas with on the message board. Maybe the OK Street Team thread. It was cool to run into a mutual friend of yours.

Oh, yeah, and I got the bubble blower and it spurts out a RIDICULOUS amount of bubbles. It takes 6 AA batteries, but there are so many bubbles, you don't even have to let it run a long time. My cats didn't know what to think- they were more interested in the noise from the blower than the bubbles. Pussies!

Hey all! We'll have more info posted soon about the schedule of events for the hula hooping clinics. Friday is a free hoop day- attention grabber day. I'll be lurking around the tent to lasso any passers by and tell them about the next day's activities. So far, there are two types of clinics: beginners (little tykes) and intermediate (older kids/tricks and such). More info coming soon. -aj

FYI-I did put a request into Team B and my Children's Tent Jefe for a band that is involved with the children's tent to do a Not for Children Only set (hint hint Boone). I was under the impressiong initially that the Schwag were gonna be close to the Children's Tent, dont think that is so.
Boone-I wanted to let you know that I have passed your name on to a local music festival I am working with that I think you would fit into. It is called Acousticadia. This is this inaggural festie (this weekend-yikes!) and I passed your info and web site along to my jefe for this festie. They have already started looking for acts for next year, and she felt DFPP would fit in perfectly for 2006! Let me know if they contact you.

Will a kids stage schedule be posted? What goes on there? I'm in Campground 3 this year, Shady Lane 263, so I'll be in the neighborhood on and off. If the DFPP are playing, I may just take you up on that washboard offer from last year. I know a few tunes kids like, so stage or not, you might hear a chorus of \"How Many Biscuits Can You Eat?\" from somewhere in the trees.

I have 2 rolls of white paper both about 300-400ft. that I would like to bring to the kids tent for crafts/drawing/painting etc.. I know its kinda late but my work was just throwing them away so I thought maybe it could be put to use by some young creative minds. If this is something that you could use please let me know. I will be there around 8am Thursday and could bring it over early that day.

There was a kids tent last year (2007) as well. I was one of the volunteers, but is wast he LAwrence Arts center planned most of the activities, and had lots of fun art activities, the clay and painting was really a big hit last year. The also had a band perform a special show for the kiddos. I'm hoping to get on again this year, and planning on coming up with some activities in addition to the artsy stuff that the arts center came up with. There stiff was great, but just to add some variety. I'm thinking a kids scavenger hunt would be fun, as well as a nature program or two. And maybe some physical activities - like 3-legged races or something along those line.
The kids tent should be easy to find, and included in the map. Hope to see you and your kiddos there!

I have a t-shirt I made when my grandson was just a tiny little thing....now he's 12. Anyway .... if they bring a t-shirt...you can have the safe paints to paint the bottom of their feet and then step on the t-shirts......write "I walked through Waka." Or something to that effect....may be too much - just an idea.
Have a WAKA board where they can draw a WAKA picture and post it.
