List of things to bring on hike:

-Pair of tennis shoes

-Bottle of water

It's a long, long downhill haul!!!!!!

Please be aware that it is a fragile part of the ecology that is on Arkansas State Park land - take only pictures, leave only footprints.

and when you go, never ask the people on their way back up how far it is, it is never a promising response. either way up, or down, really.

it is soooooo worth it though. hopefully we will still be able to get down there, i remember they closed it off last year the last couple of days.

Because it is a freaking long way down there.
IMO the hike was really long and brutally uphill on the way back. There were way to many people down there for me to even think about getting in. So if you go, make sure it is before 11am. That place gets really crowded. Also, the trail is pretty tough, and full of poison ivy.

There are several other places besides the waterfall to swim as well. They may involve getting in a car though. If you get the itch, i highly recommend taking an early morning float on the Mulberry.

Yeah....there are many great spots on the river to swim. Just a short drive down the hill. I've got some friends that own 2 cabins (the BIG rock at Whoop and Holler) right on the river close to Byrd's. I'll probably try and hang there at some point, but may need a ride since it's shaping up that I will be in a huge ass RV all weekend.

I've got room in the Subie to head down by the river for a swim one morning/noon

Also hopefully the trail down to the waterfall won't get shut down like it did last year. I never got to go, although I'm sure I could have found a way to get on the trail if I had tried hard enough. It's happening for sure this year.

The waterfall is awesome and def worth the hike (though at Harvest last year it wasn't even a water fall due to the low water). Like others said be prepared for a very difficult walk up. If you are in good shape (run/jog miles per week) it's not bad at all and is a good sub for all the miles you miss over the festival.

I saw countless people on my way up heading down with beer and flip flops, and i can bet they didn't have fun on the way back up.

I'm torn on whether or not they should have it open. It was sad watching all the wookies take baths and drunks leave beer cans everywhere. Hopefully people will be made aware of how easy it is to damage small streams and riparian areas like that and will treat it with respect this year.

There are larger, cleaner, and deeper holes a short drive south on the pig trail, just use a DD if you are going to drink while you swim

Definitely my plan of action....especially on private land on the river :)

Redding campground is a great place to swim: family friendly public access with stone steps leading down to the water. It is a campground, so expect periodic ranger checks, so this isn't the place for a beer and a ***** on the beach, but it's a very nice quiet place to swim that is just a short jaunt down the pig trail. Hardly no one there last year... (Sssshhh.)

I'm all about an a.m. swim too. Tink and I ended up at a gorgeous spot during Harvest Fest last year (because I didn't completely follow Pauly's directions.)
I say we pack the Subie and the 'Rano full of peeps and head on down to the river some morning.
