Hello everyone,
I have had my ticket for a while now, but school has kept me very busy. However, I am finally done with exams and its time for the Waka countdown :D . I was just curious if anyone is as excited about tribe as I am. I have been to many shows, but never a festival. The anxiety of the wait is killing me!

I've experienced several tribe shows. WAKA 08 they blasted off hard. It was most spectacular! Buuuut in 09 it slacked considerably, I thought. Last year they played on two nights though. The first one was main stage and I found to be decent, and the second one was at Revival and I thought it blew donkey balls. I heard some guy up front was yelling at them about how "He didn't pay for this shyt!" A little absurd. I think. But their second set was really slow and moody. Felt dark in there. I dunno. I think this year they will have a GREAT show. Its the biggest WAKA has ever been. And they only have one set. I feel dejavu. :) But they'll have to pack ALL their energy into that one night this year. So yeah. I think its going to be a good show. Fo damn sure. Haven't seen em in a bit. So lets be optimistic! the only thing that coulda made waka better this year is two tribe shows again. They had such a different feel to each last year even though last years shows were kinda all similar. Get more excited than you already are UM > Big G > STS9 > Bassnectar > EOTO > tipper ......JJJJJJEEEEEBBBUUUUUSSSS!!!

Yea im hoping since they have to cram all of their amazement into one set, it will be mind blowing. I have definitely heard great things about Big Gigantic and Bassnectar. Cant wait to jam like nobody is lookin!
What Wartockman said is dead on. Some days they're facemeltingly good and then others they just can't find a groove and it feels forced and stale. I'm optimistic about this show though. A massive crowd and a headlining slot can do wonders for a band.
I think STS9 is going to be amazing at wakarusa this year. If you've never seen them in a festival setting, it's way more intense than a regular concert. Saw them last year at Rothbury '09 and they blew my mind. Especially the first night. Lotus put on an absolutely incredible performance at Rothbury last year too.
I can't wait! Less than a month to go!

As a long time tribe addict I am really excited about this show, with the beginning of this year the boys have really started bringin the heat back, lots of mix of old and new songs, and the energy is up exponentially from last year. I felt that in '09 the band was lacking a bit for a large majority of the shows that they played, but they are back and on fire!!! waka should blow some minds, and open some eyes for the unfortunate people who only saw them in '09

Man, I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt that way. It was my first time to see tribe and I was stoked, but it was a total let down. All of my friends were saying how great it was, and I was like man there was no energy in that show whatsoever. Saw em at Cain's in March and it had so much more energy and vibe.

Saw STS9 the first time at Waka 06 I think...maybe 05. Whatever year they closed the fest anyways. I like them and have seen a few hit or miss shows. I do think with the atmosphere and having to follow up Umphrey's they will bring it hard. Don't be shocked to see UM and STS9 sit ins during those 2 sets.

From my experience, STS9 is always good, but they play "mood shows." If your mood matches the show they're playing, you win, hard, if it doesn't, it's ok.
Last year i had more fun playing with the crowd then listening to the music (the two show thing may have been a factor). I haven't seen them recently, but my friends who have had said some of their shows are the best yet, so expect some madness...

STS9 last year was O.K.. I travel alot with S9 and they played two very different sets last year. The first was a very mainstream set, playing a lot of new songs off of Ad Explorata. No.
I was highly disappointed with their shenanigans last year.
Shows that made WAKA for me last year: GPGDS, Kimock Crazy Engine, Herring, PRAANG, Funkotron, Ganga Giri, Heavy Pets, LFDC Funk, P. Groove, Ott, Buckethead. A good amount of others. But not Tribe. :( I'm groping for a better show this year.

This show was amazing. Never had my emotions been so attached to music. They started it off on a light, happy note with Circus and Beyond Right Now, and gradually got more and more intense and dark (ie Lion blew my f-ing mind) and then it went back to happy. It was like the entire set was a buildup/breakdown in addition to all the songs having their own buildups and breakdowns. It was a great feeling. That night was amazing.

Well, since we're talking Tribe ... :)
According to the band, 2010 is the Year for the Fans. If you look back at the sets that they played during the winter/spring tour, you will see that they have started pulling out amazing old songs that no one thought they would hear again. They're mixing it up, they've stopped peaceblasting us, and they are really trying to bring back the love and emotion that their old shows brought. They'll still play Shock Doctrine, HHHF, and songs like that, and I'm sure we'll hear either Heavy (BLECH) or Atlas from the new album, but don't be surprised if we hear a Vibyl, Squares & Cubes, or a Frequency 2>3. I have faith that their set this year will blow us out of the water.
I'm sad that Big Gigantic's set coincides with Tribe's because when he sits in with them it is always incredible. Hopefully during the second set he'll come out and give us a lil' sumthin sumthin.
That being said, my wishlist is as follows:
KPT
Blu Mood
Jebez
ROYGBIV
Circus
Crystal Instrument
Vibyl
Wika Chikana
Baraka

I would love to hear Baraka, STS9, Moonsockets, and Instantly. I'll be cool with the more electronic tracks too though, considering I'll be hitting up Future Rock and Bassnectar afterwards. STS9 isn't as big of a deal as Disco Biscuits to me and I have a feeling Bisco won't disappoint me.

I dunno, even though S9 has picked up the steam in 2010 busting out more gems than the previous two years, the shows are just getting really repetitive to me. Like someone said, if they're on then its magical. But when they're not, you can feel how they're trying to force it out....I think that runs with the territory when you rely on so much electronic equipment. If Murph would quit wasting 3 tracks a show to talk, and they played more strings I think the flow of the music would be better. I want to see a band play instruments, not a stage full of DJs.

Hit up one of their Axe the Cables shows. It's truly a magical experience to see a band that you know and love take it to the next level. I went to the show in Denver and they blew my mind. They'll be doing more of them this year, and who knows, possibly an all-acoustic tour in the next year, so if you like Tribe but have lost some faith, this is the way to restore it. :) They also just came out with an album of that Denver show, you should give it a listen!

Maybe it's just me, since I've only really gotten into the festival scene in the past 5 years, but if STS9 didn't have the electronic elements wouldn't they just sound like another dime a dozen jam band? (although I realize that there are now so many bands that use electronic elements in their sound) That's not to say that I don't appreciate and even love their more mellow songs, but I think it's the blend of all elements that makes Tribe truly unique. Maybe it's because I grew up listening to electronic music, but I can find beauty in the bleeps and bloops as much as a gorgeous chord progression on the guitar or an amazing percussion section flourish. And in a way, correct me if I'm wrong, aren't STS9 kind of the modern pioneers of the 'jamtronica' sound that seems to be so popular right now?
I've seen the Disco Biscuits 5 times and I've found it to be an absolute snooze every time, yet the 7 or so times I've seen Tribe has been quite captivating for me. To each their own. Can't wait to see all the happy people on top of that mountain. This is going to be quite a party.

This made absolutely no sense. I understand that the Dead started the wonderful world of jam bands, but STS9 really did start the jamtronica scene.... in a way. I'm sure there were other elements and other bands that transitioned the hippie generations into the Tribe, but I have to imagine they were the ones that really took off with it.

yes, the dead is awesome and they pioneered improvisational rock music and "jam bands" but STS9 is the farthest thing ever from the dead. ****, they don't even have lyrics/singing. tribe is more influenced more by jazz fusion and perhaps even phish than the Grateful dead. the closest thing the dead had to tribe was Drumz>Space or maybe Seastones. Phish isn't even anywhere in teh same realm as the Dead, I never understand why people lump them together either... other than 2 set shows and non repeating setlists....
Wartockman
05-15-2010, 02:30 PM
Pardon. Did you say jazz fusion? Its ok if my opinion means nothing to you. We weren't around in the 60's when the shyt was hitting the fan and the tests were all the rage. Rage...rage? Can the Dead rage? Lots of people think Tribe is the new god image for "jam" or jazz fusion. They aren't. They're just another band to most people. The Dead is where the forms originate. Those forms are mutated now with all the digital add-ons, but they are pretty much the same forms the Dead created. Gettin to half a 100 years ago soon enough. You think those tribe boys thought it all up themselves? Give credit where credit is due.
And tribe does have lyrics. Theyr digitized. Alah Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future.

if you wanna get tech about it, there was always Coletrane or Miles before the Grateful Dead. but thats too much of a clusterfreak to talk about. we could talk about this ish all night long, until the start of music. the real ?S are, what does STS9 bring to the table? as for electronic music, sts9 is changing the game, right now! they were not the first, and they wont be the last. electronic music started in the 70's and will grow forever. to put the Grateful Dead as the Gods of the jam scene is justified. they did lay down the structure for the scene we have now! but music is improv with in itself. sheeaats always gonna change.
did Elvis change the face of rock n roll? YES. Would Elvis think NIN is worthy of ROCK N ROLL status? who knows? I hear alot of dif styles in sts9's music, MMW, Janes Addiction, Pink Floyd, New Deal, GD, tons of stuff. but they make the music they play their own!! giddyup!

They're new stuff feels unlike them. Although, they have laid down some classic tunes lately. Which, while obviously their material spans widely, they seemingly avoided for a period of a few years to me while they promoted all their "progressive" tunes. Like the latest stuff, of which I am unfamiliar with all the names, but Peaceblaster too. Maybe I just have't heard them enough. That may be my problem.
giddyup!
Your right. I can't help but respect the Tribe gang in the end. They are freaks of sonic vibrations. They can destroy the hardest egg. And they can get so derty about it too. ;)

05-16-2010, 09:51 AM
All I was pointing out is the fact that ghost train was saying that tribe pioneered jamtronica, not jam bands in general. There wasn't any need to bring up the Dead because then it brings up this whole discusssion of jam bands and its origin and who spawned from who, etc. etc.
and areyoukind, there is a perfectly good reason why people lump phish and the dead together, despite being very different. When jerry died, phish had just reached what some describe as the peak of their career (i don't completely agree). Its kind of like when you go to a festival and there's two stages next to each other and when the one band you wanted to see finishes their set, you hear something interesting coming from the other stage. So you go over there, check it out, and fall in love. The dead and phish both had a huge following that was similar to the dead. For instance, while the majority of fans loved to hear jerry's/trey's guitar playing, there were certain fans that were dedicated to the bass of phil/mike.

As a HUGE tribe phan I really look foward to seeing them at waka this year (I do belive it makes my 14th tribe show). I agree with everyone on this thread that S9 has there ups and downs with the shows. They are a band the thrives off there crowd at the shows. And you can tell when the enegry is there they bring the rage. I have too say, the first rothbury in 08' when the band was due to release Peaceblaster only the week after the roth show. That 25 song set was freaking amazing. The band was on a high like no other. I feel that with the time off from the winter tour and the songs they where pulling out of the suit case along that tour we are going to see a reamped tribe. Now with Saxton being back behind the light bords for the tour you know the band is back to its orignal form and they make magic when they are on fire. So I hope for all the people that have never seen the tribe will get a magical experince like no other at waka! 9 days!

I don't know if anyone's seen this yet, but Saxton, Tribe's original light guy (and for all intensive purposes the sixth member of the band is back) and he posted a preview of the lights he has planned for the summer on STS9's Youtube channel. Judging by that, this is going to be one for the record books. Check it out and get ready to have your domes melted!

I think the biggest smile I ever had was when they kicked in Rent last year. My first STS9 experience, and I've been hooked ever since that moment.

It gets pretty loud out on top of the mountain. I was floored last year, literally.
Their first set put my ass on the ground. I was so spaced I just sat down w/ my back to that gate at the sound booth at mainstage, put my hood up, and watched the visualizer. I got some revenge the next night though.
