View Full Version : If you could add ONE more group to the lineup who would it be?

Northerner

Per the powers that be the full lineup has been released with just a few minor additions to be made later. I am perfectly happy with the lineup as it stands now.

That said, what other single act would push the lineup into best-ever territory?

I would vote for The Third Twin....if you don't know, you better aks somebody. They are currently taking bookings!!! Lets make this happen Wakarusa!!!! :D

Zilla would be nice (all members of the band are currently on lineup with their solo projects)... VibeSquad is Aaron Holstein - he plays bass/synth with Zilla-, Jamie Janover is doing his solo thing as Janover - he plays dulcimer with Zilla - , then you got Michael Travis from EOTO (the white haired guy on synths), except he plays drums for Zilla, just like he does for String Cheese...

i think The Mars Volta would be an *interesting* addition. maybe not quite waka lineup material though. dont get me wrong, theyre a great band, but thier style is a little different than what i'd associate with waka.

on a similar note, i think Portugal. The Man would be a good fit. Minus the Bear too, although they're probably too big for waka at this point. i guess that's all just wishful thinking...but both put on excellent shows.

I think The Mars Volta would be a lot better associated than a few of the bands in the current lineup. just mo. a hot night with lights, lasers, and a huge moving background with progressive rock from one of the best bands making music? how is that not waka material? its much more Waka material than Minus the Bear, and Ive seen Minus the bear, they're freaking great live. id love to see Portugal. The man though. that would be sweet.

I honestly used to feel like that. Their music is extremely layered and there's a lot to take in. Take a walk on the wild side, and itll all make sense. Listen to Frances The Mute, Or Amputecture.

It is never too late. Things happen, and we do NOT know for certain that Waka doesn't have a secret treat in the back pocket (though doubtful, it is not impossble). How cool would it be to drop a big name next month to re-ignite ticket sales?

Also, the STS9 situation could pose a real issue...if Waka is smart they are looking now for a possible swap option just in case. One has to be prepared...though hopefully STS9 gets back on track swiftly.

Me likey the way you think. I have also been hoping this might happen....they said the lineup is done, but I can still hope Bisco get's added, right? (and not because STS9 had to pullout, no one wants a pullout) I wasn't expecting any additions but Buckethead has got me thinking...maybe...

"So you're sayin' there's a chance!"
..

I sure think so. The addition of a pretty upper-midtier-ish dude like Buckethead AFTER they said "there will be no further additions" is perhaps a hint of things to come. Looking at the lineup, and comparing it to what last year cost, then factoring this years added revenue and possible sponsorships...I think they have the money for it.

Just random speculation, sure, but that's what this place is for...:))

It would probably be best to get this out of your mind. The Biscuits aren't even playing shows until Bisco Inferno with the exception of only Ultra Music Festival as of right now. The fact that Babz told everyone that they aren't even playing Starscape should show that they are most likely not going to get added to the lineup.

One last thing: I'm surprised they haven't tried to get more psychedelic rock bands, ya know? It's making a pretty huge comeback right now, so it'd be nice to see it represented at Waka. Earthless/Toubab Krewe/Black Mountain kinda stuff.

Psychedelic rock to me means 'Summer of Love' era bands like Hendrix and Cream - and particularly the San Francisco sound: Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, etc. I wouldn't use that term to describe Toubab Krewe who plays West African music with traditional instruments and a few contemporary American touches. Maybe "Afro-rock"???!?

dependable skeleton
02-03-2011, 03:36 PM
Yeah, I know what you mean. My list was more along the lines of stoner rock than psych, I guess. I hear anything that sounds like a sitar and automatically think "psychedelic". :D

DM & Friends - I'm listening to their 04 Bonnaroo show now, and that's the set that got me to buy my first festival ticket. Is there a comparable group - accessible, mellow, accomplished? It's just right for data analysis, and I'm thinking it wouldn't be bad to hear something along those lines as the sun is going down.

I keep mentioning Crooked Still - are they off the list?

While I wouldn't mind more, there is a fantastic slice of funk pie to bite into at Wakarusa this year: Budos Band, Sharon Jones, Galactic, Trombone Shorty, Papa Grows Funk, Big Sam's Funky Nation, The Pimps of Joytime, Lubriphonic - plus artists that incorporate elements of funk blended with other genres such as Spearhead and Ozomatli. That should keep your dancing shoes moving a good chunk of the weekend!

The Giving Tree Band opened last night for Hoots and Hellmouth in Ames. I would like to see them again. They were suprisingly tight.

Be aware - Hoots and Hellmouth now has a drummer. When he was setting up I thought it was a mistake, and I didn't know how that would work out with their reliance on the stomp tambourine. It works out well. They put on a great show last night for the 25-35 people who made it. To have that high energy of a show for such a small and laid back crowd was very professional. I was impressed.
