I am really not trying to be rude, but my boyfriend wants to bring a WHOLE bunch of his nice camping stuff to the festival. Its not irreplacable, but I was concerned about people taking stuff from our spot while we're gone. I have never been to Waka before and was just wondering if that was something I needed to worry about? I also keep trying to tell him to pack minimal...but he's not listening, is it really necessary to bring a whole lotta stuff for just 2 of us? It seems like we would be spending more time at the festival than at the campsite... I was just wunderin....
If anyone has any suggestions, that would be awesome!! :D

I never heard of any problems with it from last year. We had premium camping last year and left stuff there and nothing ever happened. Who knows this year though with twice as many people. I doubt they'll steal any camping stuff but I locked most stuff up in the car at night and when we were gone...

I don't think theft will be a problem but I would keep valuables under lock and key. With 15,000 of even the kindest people there is bound to be a thief or two. I did not have a problem last year. I was seldom at my camper and had a lot of lose stuff around. I guess it just depends on who your neighbors are.
You sound like my wife, I try to bring everything that I think I might want to use. Generally, I find a way to use most all of it. My wife is always wanting me to leave this or that or saying that I am just bringing too much stuff. Of course we are part of the Own~Grown Stage crew and I am literally bringing about everything but the kitchen sink.

I went to bonnaroo the first year and I didn't hear of any problems there. I would anticipate some theft, but keeping unused items out of site is generally the best way to avoid it. If you have a vehicle, keep valuables in there.
We had a neighbor borrow some things of ours at Suwannee a couple of times, but the items were always brought back and usually accompanied by some form of payment ( beer, food, etc.)
Probably not much to worry about.

We went to bonnaroo too the 1st year, we did see a bus that had a huge sign outside of it that said, \"We dont care about the money, just return our cell phone.\" But then again this is a different crowd all together, thats why we only we to bonneroo once. It is definately more phamily phriendly, which I think helps ppl keep their morals in check. And everyone good energy bleeds over to the next person. I bet Cody has a camping lock box since he is so outdoorsy. When we would go up to the main area, we would put everything in the tent, I think Nate had a lock for the tent. But ppl can cut open tents if they are determined enough. One thing to think about though, your neighbors will watch out for you, even if you just met them. You'll be fine!

Sorry for the negative vibes, but you should be concerned about theft. Sure 95% of festival-goes are probably reliable folks, but if your gear happens to be the target of the other 5%, it will sour your weekend. My advice it to lock up everything of value in your car. Over the years I've had coolers, clothes, lawn chair, etc. stolen from my campsite. Just because person looks like a hippy doesn't me they are all about peace and love.

Yea - I pretty much thought that most of my valuables I would keep in my car no matter what... I haven't had the best of luck with ppl taking stuff from me!! I'm not saying I'm all that concerned - but we were packing last night and Cody was getting a TON of stuff - I don't think it will all fit in my car!
I have another question - where's Clinton Park from Lawrence - is it easy to find?
I'm so excited about next weekend - I can't sit still!!!

I dont remember exactly cause I was on the back of the Harley last year and really did not pay attention. I do know you can go to the website for Waka and the address is posted so you can mapquest. Thats what we will probably do. There will be signs also to ease you woes of getting lost.

Clinton State Park is in the western part of Lawrence. It is very easy to get to coming from any directions. There should be signs up leading you to it. It's maybe about 6 or so miles from I-70 Lecompton exit. Lawrence is easy to get around so you should not have any problems.

Nothing of ours was stolen, but I heard rumors about some guys going around stealing stuff last year. We usually just kept our stuff in our tent, out of sight. I'll probably be a little more careful this year.
As for bringing tons of stuff, its always better to be overprepared than underprepared (or as we subgenii say \"TOO MUCH IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN NOT ENOUGH!\") but you're right, you'll probably spend most of your time at the festival grounds and not at the campsite.
I am literally bringing about everything but the kitchen sink.
But kitchen sinks are such great musical instruments...

No doubt there was someone playing one during the Mountain of Venus set at the Own~Grown stage last year, I think he was from Speakeasy http://www.cpjs.org/content/index.php?set_albumName=album27&id=2004_06_19_0029Wakarusa&option=com_gallery&Itemid=67&include=view_photo.php

We had our coolers raided for beer, that's about all we lost.

The two best ways to avoid theft are to put everything but your tent in your car when you're away (a little extreme, but better safe than sorry), and get to know your neighbors. People are at their campsites more than you'd think, and if you get to know the people around you, they'll be more apt to keep an eye on your area.

From what I experienced at SC this year \"out of sight, out of mind\" is the best plan. I was up at 6 am one of the days just chillin at our campsite and every so often a wookie would come buy all strung out and attempt to look in someones cooler or grab something off of a table. They were even pretty forceful when I told them to bug off. If there wasn't something of interest in eyesight they would typically move on/ stumble along.

CPJSJohnny,
That was Danny from Bockman playing the kitchen sink last year. He plays it quite a bit, hopefully we'll see it again this year.

I've had an entire backpack full of...everything stolen at a Schwagstock a couple years ago. It really spoiled my weekend b/c we didn't have any way to get home, no phone, no money, no credit cards, no clothes... nothin. I was sleeping in a hammock and that was in there, too! Everything turned out fine- a bunch of kind folks helped us out A LOT.
So, my strategy now is to keep everything in those big, lidded tupperware containers and throw them back in the car when we leave. The only thing we aren't putting in the car is the ice chest. But, I doubt anyone will raid my ice chest full of cheap high life lite (who drinks that $hit, anyway!?)

I'm a huge fan of the big tupperware deals. I lose crap all the time but I have a fighting chance knowing it is in one of three tubs. But you bring up a great point, Wookies aren't going to spend time opening those up or lugging them around. They pretty much just grab what's easily available.
Which includes beer out of coolers. No matter what kind of beer it is. Just put some Wookie'B'Gone Spray on the lid

my experience is that COOLERS are big targets, especially later in the weekend when the unprepared run out of beer and/or money....
i think a clean/tidy site distracts theft, obviously locking the valuables in the vehicles...

I had my lantern stolen last year.
Just stupid. I can't believe someone would walk by and just go, \"Hey this is mine now.\"
whatever. Keep it locked up if you don't wanna lose it.

We always use a \"Supply Tent\". We set it up in the back of our group. It holds the essentials (coolers, tubs, lantern, etc...). Wookies don't like to work to hard to steal so if they don't see your supplies then they will move on.

if you volunteer, theres less of a chance for things to go missing.... my question is, whats so valuable that he feels the need to have it with him? Like what kind of valuable camping gear? I had a brand new EMS tent last year which is worth a lot more than I'm sure most people would be spending on a tent, and it suffered no damages, likewise with a bunch of my other camping gear.

We had to regulate one year at Bonnaroo. It was funny because the wooks (5 of em) talked mad game until I clocked one and knocked him out Rocky style.
**** with my cooler, tent, girl, car, etc. and get a guaranteed face-full. More than you can handle for sure.
I know I am preaching to the choir, but please let em know out there: a beer or sleeping bag, etc is not worth a broken nose or more missing teeth.

I thought it was actually pretty funny.
If you leave anything valuable out in the open, you are taking a chance. Whenever I went to the concert grounds, I always locked the important stuff in the truck.
