I'll second Panic...Another good fit might be Yonder
i would boycott wakarusa if panic played there ;)
umphrey's mcgee or moe. would be a much better choice

why would you boycott Panic if they played there? I ask you sincerely.
The way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if Split Lip were headlining next year.
I thought things were perfect the way they were.
Also, I would consider Galactic, NMAS, Keller and RRFB as big of headliners as Yonder or Umphreys - moe might be a little bigger, but not much

Yonder would be awesome. I can only wish. I also agree adding Umphrey's would rock.

WOW! Sounds like someone who really understands the definition of \"newbie poser.\"
Seriously though, I think one thing missing was a big headliner. Keller, Galactic and Robert Randolph are great, but i think the fest. could have used someone bigger to end the weekend. Perhaps a little string cheese??
Or perhaps it was the lack of the big headliner that allowed the festival to still stay relatively small and under control.

My pick for next year would be JASON AND THE SCORCHERS. They first played Lawrence back around 1982 and have a large international following. They pretty much invented what's called \"cowpunk\", the mixture of high energy rock and down home country.
Jason Ringenberg also does excellent solo work. He'd be a smash hit with Waky Festers.
Early on, The Donnas and Rev. Horton Heat were advertised for this year. I hope they're considered again next year.
Probably would have driven the price up, too.
Or perhaps it was the lack of the big headliner that allowed the festival to still stay relatively small and under control.
I truly appreciated the size of this festival, and I think this is a big reason why. I don't feel the need for a \"big headliner\" to top it all off. I was excited about the lineup before I went, and after spending the weekend listening to all kinds of great music, I appreciate even more the skill these people had in putting together a diverse and extremely talented lineup. I was truly impressed with bands I had never seen or heard of before, like Split Lip Rayfield (will be going to see them in a few weeks in Detroit!!!).

Agreed, thank ya. That was part of what was so cool about this festival. This was for people who base their taste in music, not on popularity, but on true artistic quality. You don't need a \"headliner\" when you've got the best bands on tour regardless of size.

String Cheese and Yonder!
The string cheese incident would fit in very nicely too. we could get 3 sets from them :P

I also don't see the need for a big headliner. Wouldn't that just increase ticket prices? For me this was all about the music experience. There were 3 bands I had heard of & knew I wanted to see (not including the original line-up with The Donnas & Rev. Horton Heat), but I was just as excited about becoming introduced to new sounds! I like the size of the festival & the variety of bands. I think pulling in a headliner would diminish the \"feel\" of the festival & just make it another concert. Just my thoughts. WakaWakaWaka!!!

me too kk. I'm sure we were at tons of the same shows. I was wearing the Razorback Baseball t-shirt on Friday (the day the Hogs played #1 TX in the College World Series). BTW, I did hook up w/ 2 forum ppl at the Speakeasy 4:20 friday.
AND, oh goodness, I gotta ressurect the WTF Speakeasy thread on the forum to tell the other story. They wore WTF t-shirts. It was madness.
Really glad you liked my radio show! We do the webcast every Tuesday night.

I can understand what you guys are saying about this size of a festival being great. Other than things being so spread out (because they were expecting a bigger crowd) it was perfect.
Unfortunately, I know they didn't get near as many people as they wanted (or probably even needed to be completely successful).... so in my opinion, next time they either need to offer a big draw act... cut down on ticket prices (which cuts down on bands, extras, etc.), or something else drastic... and of course the vending problems probably won't help either...
Regardless, I hope they do it again. It was fun!

I'm lucky enough to go see the DDBB in about 30 min and I can't believe there are Panic haters. If they headline next year I will be more than crazy, they have been my fav. band from Bonnaroo #1 on and I can't wait until 2005. I'm really hoping for a NYE show this year.
I would rather not have it get too big...
I would like to see someone like Peter Rowan come in and sit in with some bands and play a solo acoustic set ot two at the Coffee House Stage.
I have seen him play with String Cheese, Leftover (1999/2000 New Year), Donna the Buffalo, and lots of other misc. bands. He always adds a great spark to the band and the crowd.
Just my $0.02.

could you see the possibilities if Panic played. they would unite with 3 or 4 musicians that where there this year and rip a hole in Kansas. cna you imagine Panic and DDBB w/ special guests like Derek and Luther throughout the night. i have seen Trucks play with Panic a few times recently and all i can say is WOW!
i can't wait til the boys are back bringing the heat. there are a lot of great bands out there but it sucks that there isn't really a band that brings that furocious thunder to the table.
i agree DGold....they should keep it as is...alot of the bands there were on the cusp of big-ness, and i really enjoyed the showcase of many smaller bands as well...

They should definitely try to keep it small...getting a bunch of big name acts will just turn it into another Bonnaroo. I think what the festival REALLY needed is BUCKETHEAD!

I agree. a headliner could put an end to a good thing fast. Not only would that threaten the music loving atmosphere. The promoters would then be competing directly with other large festivals which could mean big trouble. Just because you book the big shots of the summer doesnn't mean you will have a successful festival. It will pull in the riff-raff and change the whole ball game for the folks trying to make this festival a financial success. I say keep it real with acts that dedicated fans who seek out good music will appreciate! Don't make it easy for the oblivious partying fools to find or IMO it will first put an end to a good scene and second put an end to the fest altogether!

without a big draw headliner and the vendors not being supported... how will they afford to put on another festival?
I think the word of mouth from people this years festival will be enough to get just enough more people to make it profitable without making it ridiculous. I know at least 2 or 3 people who want to go next year based on what I told them.

I gotta say, Panic is the **** but they really can bring along a seedy crowd. I liked the fact that people all had their fav band and we're impressed by new stuff. UM or moe would be so tight because they're so word of mouth. Most of the bands this year felt like up and comers to me. Don't give me the same old act year after year, no matter how big they are. BTW phiserman, Bisco would KICK ASS!
I would love to see Panic, but then Wakarusa would blow up and so many people would be there.
Please God, not another Bonnaroo!

I would like to take this post as an opportunity to share a few things. First off, we are very committed to keeping this wonderful vibe going. We will never be another Bonnaroo, and don't want to be. Personally I've been to all three Roos, and this past year was absolutely ridiculous. However, in terms of viability the festival must grow somewhat. This does not mean that we're going to try to cram as many people into the Park as possible, but we would like to see all of the campgrounds filled. Also, I think that bands like those mentioned in the poll generally bring pretty respectful people with them. Again, I cannot stress enough how committed we are to maintaining Wakarusa and it's unique position in the festival world. Thank you for all of your support and for making the first Wakarusa something to remember. -David

My vote goes to Umphrey's McGee for sure! They rock and String Cheese would bring WAY too many people.. and then it would be a huge dirty SCI fest (no real offense to that)... Umphrey's deserves to top off Wakrusa :)
I thought this year that if Umphrey's was at the festival that it would have been THE perfect fest...

I thought I was the only one out there that felt this way.
Now before everyone jumps on my a$$, let me say that I LOVE Panic and have seen them many times. For the most part the crowd is cool, but I can't remember ever seeing them where I didn't run into a bunch of idiots. I'll be back to Wakarusa whether they ever play there or not - as I said, I love em - I'm just glad I'm not the only one who has noticed the seedy fringe element they attract... otherwise I would have to admit the problem is me. ha :P

I totally agree. Widespread is one of my favorite bands and I've seen them live probably more than any other band, but the crowd that is typical of their shows is not one I would want at Wakarusa. I can deal with it for a one night show, but not camping at a peaceful lake park. The Widespread crowds I've experienced do not have the same sense of community/respect for others that was one of the best things about wakarusa.

07-15-2004, 12:41 PM
What is this nonsense about bad crowds with Panic? One of my favorite parts of going to their shows, besides the music or course, is the crowd! I had MANY more drunken idiots falling on me at Wakarusa than ALL of the Widespread shows I've seen. It's like family there. Yous guys must've been sittin by the wrong people.
They totally would've been at Wakarusa if they weren't on a break. They bring the perfect vibe to a low key fest.

This is almost a repeat of what other people have said, but heres my take.
One of the big boys like SCI or Panic might take over the event. In 05 I'm going to Wakarusa 2. Not SCI at Wakarusa. Not that they would mean to do this. It's just the kind of thing that will happen when bringing in bands that have such a big fan base.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to catch SCI or Panic on any other day of the year. I just want to see them at an event they are putting on.
Go big, just not too big.

I personally would like to see Panic but I think that SCI and Umphery's might be the draw the festival needs while preserving the smallness and purely positive vibe. Not that Panic would ruin the vibe they just may \"over draw\".

bring on the brown.... WEEN!!!!!
I've given this a bit of thought and well, I must say first that WSP is one of my very favorite bands. Although, I don't think they would fit at Wakarusa. If any of you kids have been to High Sierra you'll prolly know what I mean. Also, not trying to be rude but, Hepatitis Cheese would be the same way. I'd have to go with moe. or the Umphrees. They wouldn't drive up ticket prices and I don't think they'd draw an overwhelmingly large crowd of folks who weren't already planning on attending the Festival. On a differnent note, eventhough I have absolutly no influence, I would like to nominate Mike Franti and Spearhead for a slot, and Particle for late night. (They did afterall get shut down last year. I think it was a hint bomb!) Anyway, see ya'll in June!!!!

how about Neil Young and Crazy Horse!
great sunday headliner.
sorry but I don't think umphrees or moe. draw enough to really be headliners. I think NMAS (again) would draw more than either in this area.
Friday: Cheese, not my favorite but would draw the right size crowd and mellow to boot. great way to start the weekend. Derek Trucks? Susan T? umphrees?
Saturday: NMAS, rocked and rolled their way to an amazingly psychedelic show last year. bring em back! Ween, Claypool?
Sunday: Neil, a true original, who will cherish the opprotunity to blow these youngins away! absolutely rocked at Broo two years ago. RREarth? moe?

I love Cheese and WSP. They are two of my favorite bands, but adding them would take away (at least for me) what was so great about the festival last year. People were there to see the FESTIVAL and not just one band. I think that Ratdog would be a good band to get for a coheadliner. I think that last year you had several borderline headliners and if you add Ratdog to Keller and North Miss. Alltars and Robert Randolph as well as a few other decent size crowd drawers that you had last year you will be fine. Oh I would like to see Railroad Earth too.
