View Full Version : WTF Speakeasy?????????
I just got an e-mail with an attachment that I didn't download, because it had a virus. It came from timah@speakeasyband.com and the only way someone would know I listen to them is this forum. So I say WTF? Anyone else get this e-mail? I'm not on the bands mailing list.
Bob
There is no one within Speakeasy's organization with that e-mail addy, so I'm not real sure what that is...sorry that you received a virus.

If you think that's weird, I have received some crazy viruses originating from these addresses: booking@sts9.com, waful@jambands.com jb@theslip.com, arielle@kimocksphere.com and others along the same lines. Interestingly enough, this particular email address has never been used to contact anyone at these domains and is actually rarely ever used. Don't know how it got out there, but it did.

Why would someone use jam band names to send a virus? At least my scan said it had one. Of all the bands they could be sending them from, why is it Jam Bands.
You didn't open any attachments did ya B?

Many viruses today use email address spoofing. The FROM: line does not actually show who it came from, it was \"spoofed\"
JustBob
06-07-2004, 08:46 PM
Well, how the spoof did it even know I listen to Speakeasy? I had nothing posted anywhere saying that, and had never e-mailed the band before that.
Pete(management for the band), said that person has not worked for them in 3 years. They didn't know the E-mail was still being used. Hes checking on his end, but what about the e-mails that TeamB got?
Just wish I knew the answer. No hard feelings for the band, I can't wait to see them. My first time.

You didn't open any attachments did ya B?
No, thank god. It just kind of weirded me out because this particular email account was less than a month old and has \"wakarusa\" in it, so it really made me wonder if there was a \"jam\" virus...

Possibly, your email address was \"harvested\" from someone else's address book (by a virus), or someone else's bulk email list. (You know those forwarded emails and so-called petitions that circulate via email? Ripe for harvesting email addys). Some email list may have contained both you, Bob, and Speakeasy, perhaps also other \"jam\" contacts. The virus/spoofer didn't neccessarily know it was jam related, it just knew it had a bunch of email addresses to bounce emails spoofed \"FROM:\" another person on the same list.
The email can easily appear to be FROM: an email addy which no longer exists (as was the case with your email that appeared to be from Speakeasy).
This kind of spoofed/email virus has been common for the past couple years, you're lucky if this is the first time you've encountered it.

 I also had a virus crash my computer. I never had any problems until i started logging onto wakarusafestival.com and looked up other bands websites. That is wierd that it was because of them though!

*BUMP*
I just like seeing WTF Speakeasy at the top of the message board! I think that should be a new slogan for the band, kinda like the slogan \"Primus Sucks!\" We could just go around at the festival screaming, \"WTF Speakeasy! WTF!!\"
Or how about a reference to their great song, ATF. We could get a chant going, \"WTF ATF! WTF ATF!\"
About the viruses: The virus you got could have come from anywhere. Install virus protection, and keep it updated. This kind of thing happens frequently no matter whose mailing list you're on. Unfortunately, spam, bounced emails, spoofs, and viruses are very common if you use email publically. Be sure to never double-click an attachment on an email, and I recommend disabling HTML in your email program. Also run \"Ad Aware\" and \"Spybot Search & Destroy\" in addition to your virus cleaner and firewall.
With that said, let's get a chant going....
WTF Speakeasy!
WTF Speakeasy!
WTF Speakeasy!
WTF Speakeasy!
WTF Speakeasy!
WTF Speakeasy!
WTF Speakeasy!
WTF Speakeasy!
WTF Speakeasy!
WTF Speakeasy!

lol, I hope the band is reading this, because Dgold is crazy. Hell, I'll yelll it out.
I guess I could have been on a list with the band and thats how it got to me. I never opened the virus. I did a scan and it said hell no to the dl.
I still think we have a Jam Band virus out there.

Let's pray we don't! Remember when hepetitis went around on SCI Tour (i'm not kidding!).
I haven't decided yet if we should use the internet code letters \"[u]WTF[u] Speakeasy\" or if we should just plain spell it out and really say what it stands for... \"WHAT THE F**K, Speakeasy!\"
Either way, I chuckle to imagine people screaming this at the band. They really do blow me away sometimes where I just want to ask, what the F* was that?! I'm doing it at Wakarusa for sure. I'm getting on the front row, all up in Tony's face and shouting WHAT THE F**K!! repeatedly.
JustBob
06-10-2004, 12:13 AM
lol, you have to spell it out. The letters are not as funny. You get to the point on the internet where you read things as they are. Most people read it as the words and not the letters.
Should I start counting the hours to the fest now?

On Friday, in the Revival Tent, Tony the bassist of Speakeasy wore a t-shirt that said in huge bold letters:
WTF
SPEAKEASY
Apparently the band was reading this forum b4 the festy. That was so ridiculously cool they responded to this thread in such a humorous manner.
This t-shirt was also for-sale in very limited quantity, at the Wakarusa merch booth. It was hilarious seeing this shirt mixed in with all the other bands merch. I got one and wore it disc-golfing on Saturday. Anyone else hook it up? I wondered how many people at Wakarusa knew the origin of the slogan.

I saw some of those shirts in the merch tent and was thinking myself wtf where did these tee shirts come from!
I was freezing cold buying a new long sleeve shirt and if that one would have been a l-sleeve I would have bought it. Actually I still want one anyway WTF !

we walked out of the big top on Saturday and Re points to the merch tent and says they have a WTF Speakeasy t-shirt. I'm like what? Then we walk over and they tell us the band put them in. It was so funny I almost fell on the ground laughing. I didn't buy a shirt because I missed the meet up anyway.
I did show up late for the Friday time spot, but only found jimi5A1(Andy) and his woman marylandchic(Courtney). They were very cool and we got to hang out with them on Saturday and Sunday as well.
I had no idea the bass player had one of the shirts on. Not like I was looking for it. I did get a couple pictures of the band and there it is. His base is in the way, but you can tell it one of them.
Nothing I have ever said has made it on a t-shirt before. I must say its an honor. Thanx to Dgold loving it and coming up with the meet up. I'll be sure to e-mail the band and tell them how great it was.
I wish I would have cought more of them. Only got half that set on Friday. Just to many bands on to many stages.
I also never found you D. I wanted to say hey, oh well.

I was lucky enough to camp right next to Speakeasy and Bockman's Euphio at Wakarusa and all I can say is wow. From Danny (of Bockman's) playing the kitchen sink, to Andrew guesting everywhere, these guys made a hell of a weekend out of it just by themselves (Not even counting the Fri. night set at camp MO). Sean Cannon almost had to go to the hospital on Fri. b/c of chiggars but he played it out and lasted the whole weekend. All I can say is I can't wait for these guys to get back to the midwest.

I have to bring this thread back up. Anyone guess who I'm going to see this weekend? I'm going up to Macon, GA to see some friends play(Xingu) and Speakeasy is going to be there too.
Should I yell WTF Speakeasy at the band again? I never did get a t-shirt, maybe they have some left. I'll have to ask.
The place I'm going is braggjam.com in Macon, GA, just south of ATL. I'm going to catch Xingu, Speakeasy, Rev. Jeff Mosier & the Ear Reverents, The Codetalkers feat. Col. Bruce Hampton and maybe a few minutes of MoonshineStill. If anyone wants to meet up and hang out, let me know.

I would love to see Speakeasy at Wakarusa again. They were one of the highlights last year, and they went out of their way to play extra sets for free in the CPJS tent after their fans did not get enough on the main stage. Plus they have a regional draw - they're very popular in Fayetteville, selling 400+ tickets here now.
In fact they're playing Fayetteville tonight. Where I look forward to settling these rumors I've been hearing about Speakeasy this week. Anyone else heard anything??

If the rumor that you speak of is, that Tony the bass player has left the band. Then yes, I have heard and can confirm, Tony was not with the band on Friday night in Kansas City and apparetly has left the band for good.
Johnny B
Tony is out, but apparantly the replacement is a bad ass from Springfield named Reed. He will be joining full time in April and will be surely clicking by the summer season. This past weekend saw many musicians helping make the shows special including Wil of Bockman on bass in Columbia and Fayetteville, and Dave from the Station on sax in KC. All of Speakeasy's upcoming dates are here:
