There was a few dogs last year. It would be bad if there were to many dogs thow, bear foot hippies would be steping in dog **** left and right.

This board is wild! Probably the busiest i've ever been on. Never been to Wakarusa. I'm from the New England area. But i'm burned out on Bonnaroo and this looks sick. I've heard awesome things. Might have to make the trek this year... 8)

Watching where you step is for nerds. Race car is the same forwards and backwards. I'm drunk. Mosquitos are attracted to the color blue. Whales Dream.

It was said.. NO DOGS... but there were dogs.. fact this one dood in Street teamer camp had people dog sitting his lil doggie. Saw a wicked dog vs dog (on leashes) fight near Shakedown last year. I ain't bringing my dog though he is a hipster and would groove... just hope others don't either... nothing like barefooting in dog crap.

i like the idea of having my dog around to experience all of the fun and keep me company, but on the other hand that would mean having more responsibilities...bringin food/water..having to avoid the dog **** all over the campsite...who knows what kind of trouble she could get into with a bunch of overly intoxicated hippies with too many mind-altering chemicals around. i'll leave her at home, the music and the outdoors are more than enough to keep me occupied.

I know it says no dogs but if someone brings one what would be wrong with them cleaning up after their dog so the barefoot hippies don't have to worry about it. I don't thnk I will bring my dog either. A festival like this doesn't seem the best place for a pet.

I have a dog too.. goes just about everywhere with me. But please DONT BRING YOUR DOG!!!! Its sad to see them walking around all over, stepping in poo is the last thing I'm worried about with dogs all over. We had a few dogs wander into our site last year, 1 stuck around all night, he was sleeping under our canopy when we came back from little feat, and stayed for umphreys and all that, and then he was gone in the morning. Cool pup, but I really felt bad for him.

Monty speaks the truth. You are an irresponsible pet owner if you bring your dog to a festival.

I have some of the most well trained dogs you've ever seen (my wife is an expert trainer and competes in working dog competitions at the national and north american championship level), but I would never consider bringing them into such a hostile environment.

Some CANDY-slinging w00ks stopped by my site last year with their pooch in tow. While they conducted business near-by I had to scrounge up water for their dog because it was totally dehydrated. It stayed in the shade with me and didn't want to follow them... poor thing!

Providing for a dog is nearly as difficult as taking care of a child. You can't let them run loose. How many of you have heard people looking for their lost dog after a show? You have to be sure they aren't hurting anyone or in a position to be hurt themselves. In such a crowded environment with tons of foot and vehicle traffic and who-knows-what dropped on the ground ready to be eaten by the animal, the only safe place would be to keep them in a kennel back at your campsite... but it gets too hot! You'd have to keep going back to provide fresh water, food, shade, and probably a fan if you have an electric hookup. But what fun is that for you or the dog?

No one can produce a valid argument that bringing their dog is the right thing to do. If you think I'm wrong, you are simply deluding yourself. Leave your pets at home with friends or family, or board them where they will be properly fed/watered/exercised. You will enjoy the weekend that much more without the responsibility of petcare, and best of all your dog will be safe and healthy when you return....

That can't be stressed enough. My dog is 9 years old, and the longest that we've ever been apart was last years' Waka, and the second longest was Waka '04. I'd be willing to bet that I'm closer to my dog than anyone here, but I know that leaving him at home is in his best interests.

that's great advice, thanks for the info. We are probably going to be getting a dog soon. I love dogs, but don't have one because
1)I have kids, 2 of them, it's tough to get ready for a third
2)I like to leave town too darn much

fortuneately I am about to buy a home that's conducive to dog ownership and I have networked enough so that when I do travel the pooch will be well taken care of. Seeing dogs at shows and festivals makes me angry. They rarely look like happy dogs who are well taken care of, more like 4 legged versions of their scum-ass counterparts

I'm down. Just needs to get a little warmer. I usually head down south to the Elk River or the Buffalo (when it's running). The Elk is generally a lazy, beer drinking, party river while the Buffalo can be kinda hairy at times. Most of the times, I just like to get ****ty and float down to my camp about 8 or 9 miles. No driving involved afterward = great fun.

Beautiful dogs, everyone & gorgeous kitty K-cat! I felt so bad for all those dogs wandering around last year. I love dogs, but I feel strongly that there's a place for them, and gatherings with lots of people, lots of noise, and lots of space to get lost is not the place. It's very unfair to the sweet critters, as well as the people attending. Not everyone loves animals....many people are even scared of them. Please, please, please be respectful of everyone at the fest & of the animals too, don't bring them. Getting off my soapbox now to share photos of my sweet critters :D .

Our grandpa pooch, Barney. He has no depth perception, can't hear, his hind legs don't work well, and he recently had his toe amputated, but he's still our wild puppy!

Tnk, my little buddy Floyd is about a year and a half. He's a smart little sucker. He had a rough start though. He was found on the side of the road nearly dead from fleas draining the life out of him. I think someone threw him away literally because he is completely freaked out around garbage trucks and won't go near trash cans. He hates garbage day and I can hardly take him for a walk if there are garbage cans around :(

He is healthy, loved, and spoiled now. :D

I think it's OK to bring your dog, but if you have somewhere else better to keep them you should do that. And if you do bring them treat them the way you would want to be treated and keep them close. I don't know how many times I've had to watch a dog at a festi until hours or even days later some smashed out kid comes along looking for his poor lost dog. Gotta love the dogs though!!! Lots of Love

I think it's OK to bring your dog[/quote:a29481d0eb]

No, you're wrong. It is NOT OK.
The festival organizers don't want you to bring your dog.
The people camping next to you with their young child who is terrified of dogs don't want you to bring your dog.
*I* don't want you to bring your dog - and I'm a HUGE fan of dogs!
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks don't want you to bring your dog. OK - technically they allow dogs in state parks, but I'll quote from their website:
[quote]Pets must always be restrained by a camper, cage, hand-held leash, or tethered chain no longer than 10 feet. They are not allowed on swimming beaches or swimming areas that are delineated by buoys or other markers or in public buildings or structures.

Does your dog want to spend four days in a cage or tied out under the hot summer sun? It's not that your dog couldn't have a good time in the park. It's an issue of safety for your pet and other concertgoers. What is your dog going to do while you're watching the bands? Locked in your car? Zipped up in your tent? Those aren't safe options for the dog. If you're just going to hang out in the campgrounds with your dog the whole time, please don't come to Wakarusa. Tickets will sell out and there are plenty of music lovers who want to go for the tunes.

[quote:a29481d0eb=\"phishful\"]but if you have somewhere else better to keep them you should do that.[/quote:a29481d0eb]

If you can't find someone to take care of your pets while you go on vacation for four days, then you shouldn't go. It's as simple as that. Dogs=Kids They are members of your family who depend on you. There will be parents who bring kids to the festival, but the whole family is allowed to enter the festival grounds while your dog is not. Find a dog-sitter so you can have a worry-free time.

I'm not saying you can't ever travel with your dog. My shepherds have travelled through over half the states in the U.S. and a couple Canadian provinces... but we have a van specifically outfitted for the dogs with crates, fans, shade, and access to water. A large gathering of people such as Wakarusa is NOT the place for your dog. Do the right thing...
[/soapbox, again]

I'm really not a stick-in-the-mud type of person - I'm just really passionate about keeping the festival grounds and your pets safe! And to phishful - this isn't anything personal towards you... thanks for taking care of stray animals at the show. I had to do the same thing last year.

Well said, Scott.

Dogs DONT belong there. Last year, it explicitly stated that dogs were not allowed and I saw DOZENS. Lots were there.

Please leave your dogs home. Or if you are travelling from afar, take your dog to a kennel in Lawrence and go visit him/her once (or twice) a day while at Waka (you can go in and out w/o a hassle).

everyone here sounds like responsible dog owners, as I am too, and I agree, they don't belong at fests.

just want to offer a word of caution too, because some people WILL sneak their dogs in, it's inevitable I think.

Last year I walked past a parked pickup truck in a nearby camp that had 2 dogs chained to it. I work with rescue dogs and am well aware of dog behavior so I was careful and kept my distance. but I did verbally greet the 2 dogs and they began snarling and snapping against their chains ready to tear me apart. quite disconcerting.

those kinds of dogs I DEFINITELY do not like to see at fests.

On another note, a dog wandered into our camp the last day as we were packing up, he was some sort of husky mixed breed and very hot and thirsty. I gave him water and he parked himself in the shade of our van to cool off. after awhile he wandered off but I never saw him find his people.

I say again...What's it going to be Waka? Are you going to kick those dumbskulls out this year?? If not, why? Don't let them in. If they get in, kick them out. If you can ban harmless \"boobs\", you can protect real abused animals and threatened campers/children. Right?

It was very sad last year to see numerous dogs roaming around the camp grounds & streets. The only way I can voice it, is by saying it's just not fair. Not fair to the dogs. Not fair to the people attending the festival. There just isn't any reason to bring an animal to Wakarusa.

I was in street team camping near the pooch Jackstraw referred to. The owner took care of him, but he was tied up in the shade for the majority of the festival. The owner walked him daily, yet the poor pooch was very eager for attention. I was careful not to go near him....you just never know when a calm, loving dog can turn mean. They have stress just as humans do. And I'm sure this guy was stressed! He was on a long tether with space to roam, but it's still not enough. On top of that, there were areas around our camp that I was hesitant to go because I had no idea how the dog would react to me. I didn't want to risk it. After the second day, it was getting somewhat aggravating to me that I couldn't walk around our general camp area because of the dog. And the poor guy just wanted to be around his people. Not fair to me. Not fair to the animal.

I also remember reading somewhere the amount, (percentage or number...I don't recall), of stray dogs that came into the Lawrence animal shelter after Waka. It was frightening. Granted, not all of those dogs were because of the festival, but they did see an unusual rise in those few days following the festival. So it was curious.

No dogs allowed means no dogs allowed. Please.

[/quote:408ac1de22]

Also, those dogs could've otherwise been very nice dogs...but when a dog is chained up someplace, fear and territorial issues come up. If a dog is in a strange place with thousands of people, they're obviously going to be a little freaked out and wondering what the hell is going on...if they're scared they either \"Fight or Flight\", since they can't \"flee\" because they are chained, they are forced to fight and become aggressive. Also, dogs that are chained for long periods of time tend to think of their space as THEIR SPACE and no one is allowed in it! So anyone who comes to close will be warned to back off!

Its so sad to think of any dog being chained up - let alone at a festival. There is just no good reason to bring your furkids along...none.

Speaking of keeping dogs on a line...

Many years ago, my brothers yellow lab accidentally hung itself while tied in the backyard. It doesn't take much to distract a dog and cause it to tangle its leash/chain/whatever. Trust me, you do not want to come home from work (or arrive back at your campsite!) to find your dog strung up

IMO it's best to crate-train your dog. Teach it from puppyhood that the crate is a safe place. Feed it in there. Have it sleep in there. You can get collapsible crates for travel. Your dog will feel at home even when on the road if it has its crate to hang out in.

Ehh... I've never really been a big fan of crate-training. I know people can do it humanely and I don't mind that, but so many times people misunderstand the proper use of the crate (*coughmyidiotneighborcough*)...besides I got my pooch when he was 8 years old, so he's most comfortable sleeping on the couch hah ;) But the same idea, we have his \"bed\" (which is a freaking memory foam pad!! better than my bed!) which we can easily tote around to make him feel at home when we're someplace new.

But definitely, chaining a dog is just wrong - try something humane...and what's worse is so many people don't see anything wrong with it :(

what people need to remember is dog's are smart enough, but also have pretty small brains. if you teach them from a very young age that Crate training is good, then they learn to live with it very easily. it is not cruel. it is in fact better for the dog long-term because it teaches them boundaries and restraint. the most critical time in a dog's training is the first 6 months of life, after that, if you did a good job w/ discipline, then you should have yourself a good dog that can adapt. my 2 cents

i do agree with everyone else on the Waka/Dog thing....leave your dog at home. they belong there.

Definitely, but some people think that crate training means keeping your dog in a cage all day long like he's in a shelter or something. That's what my neighbor upstairs does and when her first puppy caused too much trouble for her, she got rid of it and got a german shepherd pup. It makes me want to cry having to listen to the poor pup running around in circles, crying his little heart out all day long and all night long. She didn't take any time to actually train the dog to learn that the crate is his \"safe place\", she just shoved him in there and locked the door. Puppies need LOTS of exercise, not only for physical health, but it releases endorphins in the brain that helps them to relax and be calm...which makes it easier to teach discipline and do training. So locking a dog up in a crate for more than 6 hours a day is just not good...that's when it makes me crazy. But so long as people are doing it right, exercising their dogs, and teaching them that the crate is a \"safe place\" and not just a prison - I can see the good...I just choose not to use crates as a personal preference myself...

But seriously, I'd like to steal my neighbors dog if I could...I don't even know why she owns one. :(

That's sad katitious.

Crate training is great for a dog if done properly. It can be harmful for the dog if abused. It should never be a place of punishment.

Yeah, sadly this isn't the only problem I'm having with her, but it is the most frustrating. There isn't anything I can do and I've already tried bothering Anti-Cruelty, but its no use. So long as he's fed and has shelter, they have bigger issues to deal with than to come by and educate her on responsible pet ownership. *sigh* I've tried talking to her but she's just rude and ignorant...

I definitely would. I try to be a peaceful person but I tend to have a really short temper (I think I get that from my mother, hah)...so many times I've come so close to marching up there and busting down her door. Or! When she had her old pup, he whined too much in the cage so she locked him on the back porch...which although is enclosed, is not heated. And this is Chicago winter - we're talking about windchills of 0º and below. Oh there have been so many times my boy had to \"hold me back\"...because I was ready to unleash the fury!

What's funny is, I refrain from talking to her when I'm angry because I know I'll lose my cool - so the boy has to do the talking for me. She told my landlord she thinks HE has a bad temper...we all had a good laugh about that.

I don't understand that either. That is how I got my dog. I used to hang at a friends house all the time and one day there was this teeny puppy in a cage in the driveway of the house across the street. I went over to say hi and noticed he didin't have any food or water. This is in the Florida sun in July. I brought him nourishment and went back the next day. Same deal. So I took him on the 4th day. Turns out he had worms and mange and shouldn't have even been away from his mom yet. 3 years later Dude and I are very happy together!

Dude is much better off with funkyhippiechick. I hear he gets cereal when shes out of dog food

My old roommate did the cage thing and the dog took to it for the most part. He would rather sleep in the bed, but he knows his place.

As for discipline, a soft foam mussle works better then anything I have ever seen. Anytime the dog won't listen, all my friend needs to do is walk to the desk where he keeps it.

We have crate trained our 3yr. Old Chocolate lab since we brought him home at 8wks. old. I was really concerned about leaving him in a crate while we went to work, but it has turned out to be his favorite place to chill even when we are at home. Just keep lots of creature comforts like toys, bones etc... (we even put some old t-shirts of ours in there when he was a pup so he could get our scent to make him more comfortable). But to each there own :D

That's great. It really makes a difference, too. Your bond becomes closer.

I have to leave my dog in the house when I go to work because he likes to jump the fence, but he really likes to lie on the futon and watch the history channel. I think he was an emperor in his previous life. If I leave any clothes around the house while I'm gone, he will drag them up to the futon so it's like I'm sitting there with him.

There are a number of great boarding options and vets in Lawrence that can provide care for beloved doggies over the wakarusa weekend. The prevailing rate is $8-15/day.

We live locally, and last year, because i wanted to camp, i hired a dogsitter for the weekend so i wouldn't have to stress about it. Our dogs are our babies--they sleep with us, live on the furniture, have the run of the house and the yard. I am their person, and am responsible for their safety and comfort.

Pets and fests just don't mix. Festivals have too much noise, fast-moving vehicles and bikes, way too big of crowds, hot vehicles and sun-drenched camps, unaware children and spaced out hippies. And dogs? It's a bad mix.

PLEASE--Leave your critters at home, or if you must bring them to Kansas, board them...pm me if you want boarding options.

A WARNING:  If i see a dog locked in a car, i WILL smash the window, and drive the dog into town, never to be seen by the owner again.

Harsh? Hell Yes. But your pet can't vote, and if you use bad judgement, your animal suffers. Not on my watch.

Bording the dogs is rough, for both owner and dog. We lucked out in our area. We have Alpine Micky's Dog B&B. We have 4 dogs. The littlest goes to a neighbor's house to stay, but the three big dogs go to Alpine Micky's. This place is great. They have big rooms for the dogs that are dog people, and then smaller ones for the more anti-social pups. The rooms have couches and TVs and stuff to make the dogs feel at home. Our shepherd was always really freaked out when we picked him up from boarding, but not anymore. They're all just as happy as can be when they stay here. During the summer, they put a huge pool outside for the dogs to play in. Our Golden loves that. Now if we can just get our Newfie used to the water... big baby!
If any of you live near Denver and want the best place in the world for you dogs to stay, go check out Alpine Micky's. They are in Bailey, CO. http://www.alpinemickys.com

I should also say that although their website makes them out to be a pretentious fru-fru kind of place, they are sooooo not that kind of place. These are very laid back mountain folk and the prices are very reasonable. It's well worth the drive from anywhere in the Denver area...

Dear God from the dog:

Let me give you a list of some things I must remember to be a good dog.
1) I will not eat the cats' food before they eat it or after they throw it up.
2) I will not roll on dead seagulls, fish, crabs, etc., just because I like the way they smell.
3) I will not munch on \"leftovers\" in the kitty litter box although they are tasty.
4) The diaper pail is not a cookie jar.
5) The sofa is not a face towel. Neither are Mom and Dad's laps.
6) The garbage collector is not stealing our stuff.
7) My head does not belong in the refrigerator.
8) I will not bite the officer's hand when he reaches in for Mom's drivers license and registration.
9) I will not play tug-of-war with Dad's underwear when he's on the toilet.
10) Sticking my nose into someone's crotch is an unacceptable way of saying \"hello\".
11) I don't need to suddenly stand up straight when I'm under the coffee table.
12) I must shake the rainwater out of my fur before entering the house. Not after.
13) I will not throw up in the car.
14) I will not come in from outside and immediately drag my butt.
15) I will not sit in the middle of the living room and lick my crotch when we have company.
16) The cat is not a squeaky toy so when I play with him and he makes that noise, it's usually not a good thing.

And finally, my last two questions. Why do humans have only 10 commandments and dogs have 16? And most importantly, when I get to heaven, may I have my testicles back?
