I am probably going to bring some \"world\" instruments of my own (djembe, didjeridu, berimbau, maybe more), so if you run into my friends and I maybe you'll get to hear SOME kind of \"world\" type stuff.

I HIGHLY recommend The Motet for all you world music fans. They have like 3 drummers including all the drum-types you listed above. They also incorporate soul, reggae, rock, New Orleans, jazz, and jam, into their Afro-Cuban-World music stew.

And YES, they will be at Wakarusa!! Don't miss The Motet!!

JustBob
06-08-2004, 10:47 PM
The best thing about the Motet is that they all play drums. Sometimes they will all pick up a drum or something and about 6 of them are just on precussion. They do that in the middle of a song, or just start songs like that. Mind blowing. Also, they share the Sax Player with Robert Walters. Cochemea Gastelum is one of the best sax players I have ever heard live.

Missouri Mitch
01-21-2005, 08:47 AM
1. Big Smith (Springfield, MO)
2. The Wilders (Kansas City)
3. PoDank String Band (Tulsa OK)

I love that old timey, hillbilly stuff...

tnkrbellup
01-21-2005, 12:46 PM
Awwww...Mitch! A man after my heart! Another group we have in common :D . The Wilder's are great! It's cool to have someone so good be local. I just got turned on to some of the old-timey music this past year by a good friend of mine. I'm even listening to Ralph Stanley right now.

There are quite a few groups I'm anxious to see at Wakarusa. Ones I've never heard of before,
but who sound great from the clips I've found.....Jeff and Vida, Son Volt, Railroad Earth, Junior Brown.

Then there are the ones I've seen & want more of....... I already am a fanatic for Split Lip!!! Them boys is too much fun! And then there's Donna, Hackensaw Boys & Truckstop Honeymoon. Dang.....how long until June???

Missouri Mitch
01-21-2005, 03:24 PM
hey tnkrbellup!
Yeah, you right...about the Wilders! I'm headed to Lawrence in a couple of weeks to catch 'em at the Free State Music Festival (Feb. 5 and 6)
I am an even bigger fan of Donna the Buffalo. I have been chasing them around the country for a couple of years now...
Have also seen the Hackesaw Boys several times back in Virginia and at last year's Waka.
Well the list goes on and on...
The music never stops.

tnkrbellup
01-21-2005, 03:58 PM
I'm hoping to make one of their shows that weekend also, Mitch. It will be a pre-birthday celebration for me :D . Hoping everything lines up just right so I can go!

I listened to some Big Smith clips after reading your post earlier......LOVE 'EM! I bet they put on a fun show! Maybe I'll make a trip to Springfield someday to dance to some good 'ole hillbilly music :P .

Missouri Mitch
01-21-2005, 04:06 PM
The Wilders headline Friday nite (10:30) and play two sets Saturday nite
(3:00 and 9:00) at Free State Music Fest.
I strongly advise seeing Big Smith live. Some of the best family harmonies you'll hear this side of the Missisippi. Big Smith usually make a Kansas City run during the summer...Most likely at Davey's Uptown Ramblers Club...the best bar in Kansas City for live music and cheap drinks!

Wahooo Wakarusa!

tnkrbellup
01-21-2005, 04:13 PM
Oh yeah! I've been to Davey's quite a few times this last year & heard lots of great bands! Split Lip, Meat Purveyor's, Rex Hobart, Dale Watson
It is THE place for live music!

I'll definitely keep my eyes open for Big Smith. Or take that road trip :D

Missouri Mitch
01-22-2005, 07:18 AM
Hey tnkrbellup!
Let me know if you plan to go see the Wilders at Free State Music Fest. It is always fun to put a face with an email...

Another band to think about adding: The Mammals

They are really jamming more than ever, I think they would be a hit at Wakarusa (they were definently a hit at last years MagFest in Florida, JustBob did ya see em?). The Mammals are led by Ruth Ungar (Jay Ungar's daughter) on vox/fiddle/uke and Michael Merenda on guitar and clawhammer banjo, both great singer/songwriters, and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger (grandson of Pete Seeger) on banjo/guitar/vox.

\"Hey Mr. President who had his big brother push him through
Your daughter's drunk, your other daughter's drunk, your daddy's rich & you are, too!
'lectric car is gagged and bound, you're burning wind mills to the ground
and California's solar panels are in the White House lost & found!
We all gotta fill the tank
When it's 15 bucks a gallon we'll have you to thank\"
- Ruth Ungar and Michael Merenda

Did I catch the Mammals? Only 3 times on stage and one big jam in the camp sites.

http://www.ofoto.com/BrowsePhotos.jsp?&collid=23688017706

See if you can pick out The Mammals, The Duhks, and Jeff Mosier in the circle of pickers from my pictures.

I'm now a lifetime fan of both The Mammals and The Duhks. I cought 4 shows of the Duhks and can't wait to see them at SpringFest. It would kick ass to see The Mammals at Waka.

Welcome back to the Waka board FstvlGrl, I loved your pictures from last year.

I heard a rumor that Phil and friends are a possibility. They would absolutely rock! Black crowes will be circulating around now that the're reunited. These would be two different bands I would love to see there. As far as last year returnees, Keller and Galactic would be my top choices!!

phisherman
01-28-2005, 10:18 AM
This year we need the Ben/Russo Duo again. They were the SH#T last year, completly rocked my face. Loved the fact that they were Thurs night, lots of room to move and groove. Stanton can come and play with them again, and oh yeah...how about that Mike Gordon guy (heard he's pretty good)

Missouri Mitch
01-28-2005, 11:35 AM
I would have to agree that Phil Lesh and Friends would make a mighty fine addition to the lineup. I recently acquired all three Warfield Theater shows (12/17-19/2004) and they are stellar. With Railroad Earth on this year's bill, part of Phil's Warfield \"friends\" will already be here!

Last year's Galactic sets blew my mind. Stanton Moore is a skin poundin' genius! Bring on the boys from New Orleans!

How about some Cornmeal? Everybody should check them out at www.cornmealinthekitchen.com. They'd make a great addition.

Forget about Bright Eyes, Metapneuma (http://www.artistlaunch.com/metapneuma) is a WAY better Omaha band.

definitely FORGET about Bright Eyes. Wakarusa doesnt need any depressing emo music. Nature, camping, and great jambands wouldnt really mix well with crying about your girlfriend.......

Panic would be my first pick, moe. is great. But what about blues bands, some really jam and the diversity of bands that are brought in would make it a natural. Someone like James Solberg or Rod Piazza. Love the blues.

i hope you enjoy the show lifeseeker, i just dont think they'd fit well at this kind of festival. during the first two years of bonnaroo, organizers were trying to shy away from angst-ridden bands and I think Waka should do the same. It needs to remain a positive minded fest. anyway, peace.
