Hey Everybody,
I was just thinking that all Lawrence based street-teamers and volunteers should introduce themselves here. In addition, let's us start compyling ideas as far as how we are going to let Lawrence know of Wakarusa. I'll give some ideas now; I can cover the KU campus and dorms, if anyone wants to help let me know. Other than that I wish to hear from all of you and I hope all is well.

Hey,
Representing the T-town Topeka, I'm Grant. Go to \"intoductions\" to find out about me. I can cover alot of Topeka (shops, local shows, ect.), but I will definitely be coming up to Lawrence to help with the campus/city spots. Let's help out here in the locale, to keep going one of the best things to ever come to Lawrence, KS (ok, Lake Clinton).
Peace,
Grant

Hey not Lawrence but I am from Wichita and anything happening I do is in Lawrence (Kdub March 1st) so I'm down to meet up with you kind folk. I know a street teamer from Hays is doing the Kdub show also, he has already contacted me. Let us put our minds together and make this Waka twice as good as the last :D

Hey all, it's the lone Western KS teamer. There should be about ten of us comming up for the Kdub show on the first. We're planning on spending most of the day wandering around Lawrence aimlessly before the show, so if anyone would like to join our little troupe, drop me a pm and we'll meet up somewhere. Looking forward to meeting some new heds out there!

Hey everyone, I'm Ali... I'm up here in Lawrence. I work downtown at Cafe Nova, so I'll for sure be hitting up Mass St., coffe shops, to put up posters... also on campus. As soon as I get my promotionals, I'm going to try to hit up as many shows as possible. May try to go to KC for Herbie Han****, so I may be able to do something there, too.
If you want help in the area... let me know

What's up everybody? Everything is good at my neck of the woods. I saw something cool today; 3 Wakarusa stickers hung proudly on Wescoe Terrace (its a building on campus for those of you that didn't know). I would like to go to the BMR show on Friday; however, I have already got prior commitments. I don't know if you remember this Derek but I asked you to play a lick that would resemble a monkey sliding down a giant banana. It was at the Bottleneck, I believe. I've seen you guys play I think 6 or 7 times and I think you guys are better everytime I come to listen. The first time I saw BMR play was at 1140 Mississippi around 2 years ago. I actually lived at the house last semester but ended up moving out due to things out of my control. While living there I got to know the neighbor Ryan, he works at Free State, however I haven't seen him in awhile. Hopefully, I can make it to the next show but other then that good luck BMR, you guys have got something good going.

If anyone is going out of town on spring break, via train, bus, car, plane, bike, and/or wagon; remember that this too is an opprotunity to enlighten others of the great Waka'. I guess just set aside a portion of the promotional material for the trip(s) that you will be making during the upcoming months. Keep up the positivity!

In regards to the question regarding springbreak and promoting outside of kansas... i'm actually going to be staying in town for break, but since my boyfriend's school and KU have the same break, he'll be kicking it with me here in Lawrence for the week. He goes to school at Western State College in Gunnison, CO... I'm gonna give him some promotionals to put up around his campus and up near the ski slopes of Crested Butte... there's a lot of get-down kids out there who would be interested in Wakarusa. Can't wait!

KS people: I'll be in town (Topeka) during spring break. I will probably come up to Lawrence a few times though. If anyone want to coordinate, we could poster together. or at least let each other know where we're hittin', that way we don't cover the same ground. I'll anxiously wait until the packets arrive, by bannering websites and forums.

Lauren,
You should definitely hit up Supersonic Music, Manning Music, Midwestern Music, Hume Music, and Steam Music; these are all places that will receive heavy traffic from musicians. It's usually musicians who appreciate music the most, so think of some places that will be influential for music lovers. See if there is even a bulletin board at the Kansas Museum of Natural History, that might be a spot that you might want to hit up. I know I'm going to hit up the Natural History Museum on the KU campus; museums usually attract tourists, this is prime cuz then they go to where ever they came from and tell the locals...possibly...if they are interested...but it will still be in the back of their mind.
---mike---

03-15-2005, 11:55 PM
Yo mike,
Good suggestion on the museum, i never thought about that one! I'll have the music shops covered. I've taken weekly lessons at Steam and Supersonic over the past 4 or so years. and you're right, those stores do get high volumes of traffic, esp. over the weekend! I know the guys at Steam are cool as i've postered there before, same with Supersonic. I was planning on going to the Mass St. area to tag some spots, particularly Steam Music (the Lawrence one), 7th Heaven, the pipe ranch.... once the stuff arrives, but i don't want to recover ground, so let me know where you hit.
Lauren- do you need any help with the WU campus? i know it's not big, but just wondering cause it's a key place in Topeka. Do you go to local shows? I'm usually at the Boob every other weekend seeing friend's bands, so i should have that covered. Do you have any other suggestions as to places besides the coffee shops, WU, and the headshops?, cause it looks like, combined, we'll have those places covered. (i'll probably do coffee shops b/c i know a few people who have helped me put stuff up before. Don't bother going to Classic Bean in Fairlawn Plaza, they never let you put stuff up.)
I still haven't got my promo packet.
have a jolly week,

Hey Mike - great suggestions I will definately hit all the music shops here in town I've played in some drum circles with the guys from Super Sonic. Hopefully I get some more promotional stuff pretty soon though because I'm going to the Cheese shows in Colorado so I want to make sure I have enough bills for those shows and to take around Denver.
Lovephest - you can hit up WU too and see if I missed anything I probably won't go there until after this weekend just so I make sure I have enough bills for Colorado. Have you got your package yet? I go to some local shows the Booby Trap usually has that heavy crap not a big Phan of that but I have seen some pretty good jams up at the Celtic Fox I will definately put some flyers and posters up there. But for good music I usually have to travel at least 20 minutes but if you hear of anything great let me know. Lots of Love, Lauren

Hey,
I'll see you at the orchestra tonight, I'm not going to be able to get in cause I have little money; but I will joint efforts with you guys and pass out handbills. What time do you think is a good time to meet up?
I have hit up a fairly good portion of campus so far. For all of the dorms on Daisy Hill, I have requested from the adminstrators to allow the exhibition of Wakarusa handbills of all floors of the dorm. From there, the RA's will receive them and display them on their activity boards for the hall. Public bulletin boards are not very likely in the dorms. As far as the campus is concerned, I have tacked two handbills per public bulletin boards. In each building I have found at least two bulletin boards to post on; I'm sure there is more but I have been doing all of these on the way to class. The buildings that I have gone in are the Art and Design, the Theatrical building, Anschutz Library, Snow Hall, Wescoe, Strong Hall, and Fraser Hall. I know that there is still alot of ground to cover but I have been really busy with class. I have a test this Thursday night, but Friday is the day that I really want to get out there. That's the day when everyone is happy and in a good mood; the day that they end up going to parties and talking with people. Friday I want to hit up the rest of campus and pass stuff out. If anyone is at all interested, Let's Do It!!!
Friday and Saturday are good days to hit up the campus and the town. Also I think it would be wise if someone hit up Abe and Jakes Landing on Wednesday; DJNOTADJ is playing for a Delta Force party.

Hey Grant,
I can't make it at 7:00 because I'm tutoring, I thought that it would be a good idea to pass out handbills after the show when everyone is leaving and going to their car. If handbills are passed out before the show their is a tendency for them to get lost before they get in their car and go home.

Hey everybody,
I just wanted to congratulate you for your awesome efforts. Putting a Wakarusa bumper sticker on your car DOES go a long way with promoting. Hell, they should send us 100 of those things to just plaster places and give to people. Everyone always loves stickers. :)
People come up to me all the time, usually at school, and ask about waka. Just an idea.
Here's a little list of the places that i've hit so far (off the top of my head), for lauren or whoever else is in topeka:
CD Tradepost- Wanamaker
Classic Bean- Fairlawn, Wanamaker
New York City Cafe
Grooveshack
PT's Coffee Co.
Lazio's Coffee
a few shows at the Boob
a couple of friend's shows other places
Sunday Electric Jams down at the Celtic Fox- (my friend plays down there every week, so I give them to him when I can't go.)
Churchill's Cigars
Third Planet- in the mall
There's some more, but these are the main ones that came to mind.
I will put my full list on here once i find it. Good suggestion Lauren about the Fox, there are some good jams down there!

Everybody come to the Granada tonight!!! My friends and I are entered into the Jayplay Live \"battle of the band\" performance tonight. There will be four 30 minute acts. We are the first to play and we go on at 9. It's going to be our fourth time to ever play together. We are all instrumental and it will likely be an improvisational set. The other three bands I'm not really sure of; I think that one is a hip-hop rap group, the second is kinda classical rock, and the third is heavy metal. You should check it out and promote at the same time, help spread the local underground jam scene.

hyzticx,
I would advise you to visit the lawrence.com website. It has ample amounts of information concerning events that taking place in town; in addition, it will inform you of restaraunts and anything else that you may find pleasing to your senses. My opinion on what you should do...ask you principal where you can hang up a poster and do it. Leave stacks of the little handbills in places that you know people will be: like check-out lines of local businesses and anywhere you think that you would pick up such a nice flyer. I strongly recommend the following when you are handing these handbills out to people: Inform and show them just how great the handbills are. I've had people be like \"no thanks\" but then I say \"but look at how soft and smooth it is\", (this will really grap their attentional window) I then will rub it on my cheek and be like \"wow this feels good, this is unlike any other flyer that I've ever seen\" I've had people laugh and they sure enough take it and look at it. It's best to do this to people after they see a concert, they are usually still in a tranced state of mind and are in search of something intriguing. Basically capture their attention: do what you think it takes to get them to put that flyer in their pocket. Have fun and good luck.

Are any Lawrence based street teamers still alive? Or is it just me? It seems that anytime I try to hand out a flyer, the individual acknowledges me and tells me not to worry about it cause they are already going. Things are looking good in these neck of the woods, I'm going to go to Topeka this weekend after finals to get rid of the rest of my supplies. I have around 15 posters and 75 flyers. Can anyone in Topeka give me a report on how promotions are going or where not to go? In addition, my friend received their ticket in the mail a couple of days ago and I think that it's awesome! Just makes one even more excited for the summer; it's so much better than one of those crappy orange and yellow ones. David, I was wondering when the next set of supplies where going to come in; I'm moving out of the dorms this week so...I don't know...do we just want to meet up like we did last time? One more thing, I'll be posting my promotions picture sometime in the next week; sorry for not doing it sooner. I have a final tomorrow morning at 7:30 so I'm going to bed. Good luck on finals everyone! And for those not taking finals, Good luck on everything!

I have quite a few posters and handbills left to pass out. I'm going to the Gorge next weekend for the Sasquatch Music Festival, which will be awesome, and I will bring along a bunch of promo stuff for Seattle also.

I guess I didn't notice this post before....I'm in Lawrence, but no car...walking and the bus, I guess that's less money and pollution. I'm new here and need to make some friends...and it'd be great to hang out at Wak with you all. Yeppers peppers....

I'm sure you could catch a ride with someone from Lawrence to Clinton Lake. If not I could grab ya on the 15th when I get up there, I'm setting up camp at 4pm that day (or whatever time I can get in due to lines)

Hey, I'm sorry dude, I meant ride's around to promote....my neato momma is taking me and some friends, and her boyfriend, like last year. I really hate being an inconveniance to anyone, so I'd never ask you to give me a ride to Wak fest, he he he...I'd walk first. Anyways, thanks though, very neato of you![/quote]

Hey Mike - I have also noticed how hard it has gotten to pass out flyers around here, not that it is a bad thing just that everyone either already knows all about it and has a flyer or they alread have tickets we must be doing a good job. Because of this I have really been focusing on getting flyers out in locations and also out of town whenever possible even though people out of town sometimes have the same reaction. Good Luck!!
Lots of Love, Lauren
