I guess that I could have had the title to this post read, \"I'm getting laid off\", but I didn't want to sound too self-centered. I work for a major telecom and they are surplusing 31 of 200+ people in my office (including me). I'm 15th from the bottom in seniority (one of the new people) as I've been there almost 12 years. My position is union represented, and they did offer me a job in Pittsburg, PA, but I just can't move out East- no way. The severence will be enough to keep me on my feet for maybe four months, and my mortgage isn't real huge by most standards, but it's just me in the household, so I am going to have watch my spending, and maybe find a roomate. Our competitor, Sprint, is cutting approximately four-thousand positions (not sure how many of those are in KC), so it does make it kinda hard to say, \"why me\"? Cerner corporation announced something like three or four hundred were getting axed, and this only means it will create a glut as the labor supply is larger than the demand, so of course, compensation goes down. It's just great when IT people compete for jobs in the service industry! Thankfully I have a good support network and nobody will ever take my pride. Maybe this is the calling to raid my 401K (if there's anything left after these big, recent plunges in the dow) and start my own business? Okay, I think I'm maybe out of the denial stage, thanks for listening as I have slowly been telling my friends. On my way to Lawrence.

And Bush says he's \"optimistic about our economy.\" What a wanker.

I think Roy Zimmerman was right when he said Bush's presidency was part of a conspiracy to make Nixon look rational, Reagan look fiscally responsible, and Dan Quayle look intelligent!

Good luck to you, man. 12 years is a long time to devote to one company. No matter how much they preach loyalty to the company, it always comes down to dollars. I hope you land on your feet. I can only think of 4 buisnesses that are recession proof: education cuz people are always going to have kids; bar owner cuz people will spend their last nickle on beer; funeral director cuz people are always dying; and crime cuz even if you screw up and get caught, you'll have a roof over your head, 3 meals a day and health care.
