Over 40 and till trying to support and enjoy great live music? Tired of your Dwight Shrute office desk bobble head being confused for an Elton John statue or asked by that same office mate if you've ever seen Celine Dion or John Tesh in concert? Secretly listening to Satellite JamOn station when everyone else your age sings to The Beach Boys? Yearning to meet other plus-age minded lovers of Big Smith, Panjea, The Orzic Tentacles and Delta Nove or for that matter----to even KNOW that they exist out there somewhere mixed in with the younger/non-silver-haired Waka whippersnappers? Well look no further! Let's meet this summer '08! Go to some shows! Make new friends! Share a meal! Convince others that yes,...they too can REALLY stay up through the wee am for some great music even though it's waaayyy past normal bedtime! ---I know you are out there!

my mom taught me I can stop counting at 23, and that's exactly what I did. Every now and then I have a birthday just for the hell of it, but I DO NOT always count up. Seriously, I worked with a nurse in Colorado that was 65+ and skied triple black, played tennis/racket ball, and God only knows what. I know it may be a cliche', but it sounds like your LIVING proof that age is but a matter of the mind.
I never plan on getting old. Seriously, when I was 27, I forgot my ID in the car and wasn't planning on drinking that night, so I let the door ppl put BIG BLACK X's on my hands. Later that night, this girl got talking to me and was \"totally\" into me b/c she thought I was under 21 too. And I'l tell you what, I personally don't think its because I look THAT young. I like to think of it as because I feel that young - think, believe, dance, love . . . and you shall live forever even if your mortal body might not. :)
If you see me at Waka, feel free to hang out and Jam up some good music. :P

Thanks for your reply.
It all makes sense to me.
I was actually hoping to build some comraderie/community thru this summer's festival with getting this age group communicating with each other/hanging out, etc. You know what I mean? I'm not even sure how to go about it but I still like the idea. Mainly, cause like you, I know these people are staying young and trying to have fun and enjoy themselves/life. That's more the types I want to be around.

White Owl always hits on my sister. He's gotta have a good 50+ years on her. Last time she said \"Um...youre old\" to which he replied \"But I'm young at heart, baby\"
Tho which she replied \"no....youre old\"
Not saying your an iconic pedophile that people worship because he wears groovy pants (You lose whiteowl) but this thread made me think of that guy.

I think that you will find quite a few 40+ folks at Waka. I know that I am one on them.

Yes, they are there...it's the plucking them out from the masses...I'd like to do! This will be my 4th Wakarusa and it feels like this age group grows bigger each year. I'd like to meet more!!

Hmmm....does 39 count? I'm almost there. And, can a person be both \"young at heart\" and an \"old soul\"? People of age have much to offer. I seriously doubt I will ever get too serious about life...I like staying young at heart. But, having the maturity and wisdom of years brings a certain completeness to life.
Last year was my first Waka. For many years of going to NO shows (after Jerry died), I thought the music magic was all gone. Fortunately, it's not only still here, but stronger than ever!
Thanks to Bogmonkey (who turns 40 before Waka) for getting his little brother back into things!

Well however you BogMonkey (?) brothers are..you sound interesting.
I would love to get a community of 30+'s together at Wakarusa this year.
Somewho.
Just interesting in building community.
Gotta keep stayin' young, that's for sure!
I work in a stuffy office with others 10 years younger...who are big bores and don't do anything fun, inspiring or new.
I refuse to be like that, don't you!

Camp Habibi is almost entirely comprised of white-haired, over 40 folks.
We've got a doctor, a lawyer, a scientist, a linguist, a social worker, a bookbinder, a nurse, an artist, a CPA, a teacher, and more than a few stories.
Naps are common, children under 12 forbidden. This is an adult-only camp. Stop by for a visit and kind beer!

Thanks for this info and for the invite!
I would love to come by.
How do I find Camp Habibi and where?
My husband and I usually just do the general camping and \"land where we land.\" We would love to come by and meet some more 40+ers.
We'll be there for the whole 4 days!

I turn 40 in May, so I will officially be \"40-plus\" at the fest this year. I have NEVER \"acted my age\", and thats fine with me. I see shows, literally, EVERY weekend - no problem. Yes, I am a responsible, supervisor-status, IRA-having professional - but that shizz just enables me to live my fun lifestyle.
I was a late bloomer...been seeing Phish and String Cheese for years before I realized (within the last few years) just what kindof great music was available out there which surpasses Cheese and Phish in many ways.
I also started taping almost 2 years ago, which has helped me to get to know lots of local bands and become even more intimately involved with The Scene.
I wish there were more of our kind out there, but a lot of over-40 types are really boring folks trapped in the rat race. I believe that life should be lived \"NOW\", not at some point \"when I'm retired\"..LOL
I also love hanging with the kids at the shows...I love the exuberance and energy that comes with youth. For the most part I get nothing but respect from the youngins...

I like the idea of a gathering of the \"chronologically older\" folk. I'll be 45 shortly after Waka but have no plans to act it. Ever. No sense to it. You're not old till you decide to be old.

If I make it to this Friday (damn good chance in my opinion) I will hit the half century mark. It's beautiful that an event like Wakarusa can draw in a wide age group and some diversity- although we could use more. To me, it demonstrates the power of music.

Not to be a baby or anything,
but I feel a little excluded.
It would hurt my feelings if my friend Sunflower got to go to a fun 'over 40' gathering at Waka, and I couldn't go with her. :(

Let's not make any age restrictions. (Life is too short for that!)
I just thought it would be good to start a community of regular festival go-ers who don't fit into a mold, are maybe a bit more \"age mature\" and would like to meet other like-minded souls. Maybe --to see some of the 4-day shows with or go to other festivals/camping with, etc. It's just an idea that I haven't seen posted yet. Most the population of the festivals are in the 20 -25 age range (would you agree?) and how' bout a voice for those that fall out of that range?

Just turned 45 in February, but that doesn't matter to me. With age comes confidence & being comfortable with who I am, and what I want. I am finally ok with who I am. I'm definitely not slim & cute like I was in my 20's, but I'm also not unsure & self-conscious like I was then either. I prefer feeling good about myself & doing what I want no matter who is looking. 8)

The confidence exuded by women who are comfortable in their own skin is WAY more sexy/attractive to me than some arm trophy/eye candy with no substance.
Big props to the \"experienced\" folk for teaching the next generation the proper way to get down. At Wakarusa one will see ALL different forms of \"getting down\", but if you want a substantive way to get down on the long term, take a lesson from peeps who have been doing it awhile. Safety first, excess in moderation, take care of your fellow man.
Can't wait to party with you all! Young and old alike!

This is our 2nd year and again all 4 days. Myself on the \"other\" side of 50 and my beautiful wife still in the mid 40's. Myself being called Jerry Garcia until I cut the hair, and maybe that is not a good thing. Would love to meet up with others of the \"over 40 set\".

I just turned 39 in April, so this will be my last Waka in my 30's....but sure as hell not planning on it being my last!!! Thanks KB...I think what you said is totally true, but us girls talk ourselves out of it sometimes when the wrinkles and the greys rear their ugly heads....hey.....you gotta remember it DON'T matter...have fun, and sleep when you're deeeeead!!

Hey punkin, where will your Camp Habibi be? I noticed that from another thread and I think I just might have to ride by and check you guys out! You sound cool as hell...I think it was on the camp flag thread...I'll go back and check your flag if you'll let me know approximately where you'll be....
I LOVE Michael Franti if that's where you got the habibi from....

This is a great thread! We all seem to think very similar in regards to our age. I love that! I work with a group of women who are on average 10 years older than I am, and for the most part, they think of themselves as \"old\". I get bogged down by that sort of talk. Please!!! No more menopause stories!!! Of course, I have my days when I don't feel good about myself & I do \"feel\" old, but mostly that isn't the norm. They don't understand me at all...don't see why I like going to shows so much....we just don't have any of the same interests. They are good people, just different attitudes than what I have. Maybe I'm needing to find my older (cough cough) friends through Waka???
KB, you rock! I knew you were a kind soul, but you that post just raised you way up in my book! Remind me to buy you a drink!
And amsanite2, you can shower me with old gal compliments all you want! I'll take anything I can get  .
You can find 3 lovely over 40's camping together (with some young'uns!) in CG1....sunflower, me & gingerae. Come say hi!

Thanks to everyone who posted a comment and interest in this forum for Waka '08.
My whole idea was to drum up some interest in bringing 30-40-50-60-70's together in the 4-days. Make new friends, share a meal(s), find someone to hang with and even to go to other festival/music events with, etc. Meet others who don't physically and mentally have one foot in the grave and still want to feel alive and have fun!!
I have college offspring and I swear they each make 47 new friends each week. It's time we do too!
I just do 'general camping' but it sounds like Campground I is all the happening so you all beware of the lurking whiteairs mysteriously showing up unannounced!
Here's an option for meeting:
For those who are already there and set up thursday am, how 'bout meeting up at the Revival Tent at 2pm to catch the fabulous Big Smith-near the middle of the stage and back a bit? The Revival Tent is smaller and maybe easier to spot the octogenarians. Just introduce yourself and mention this forum and we'll all take it from there!
If arriving on Friday am and all set up: how' bout meeting at The Prairie Stage for That Damn Sasquatch at 10am-near the middle of the stage and back a bit?
On Saturday: how 'bout meeting at the Sun Up Stage for Chicago Afrobeat Project at 12 noon-near the middle of the stage and back a bit?
On Sunday: how 'bout meeting at Dr. Dog at the Revival Tent at 12 noon-near the middle of the stage and back a bit?
Ok, sooo I'm just tryin' something here! Any other suggestions welcome?
