View Full Version : Jamming

I'm coming with a beginning guitar player, but I want to do some serious jamming on banjo with whomever will have us.

Maybe \"serious\" is the wrong word... but fun and ecclectic. We're in VIP, but have axe will travel is my motto.

I will bring my pipes, too, for the parade, but its pretty hard to jam with strings on the pipes (at least acoustic strings). Drums maybe.

Heck yeah! You know, I didn't see any banjos at Waka (at least in the camping area)- you should have no trouble finding jam phriends.

Last year folks were jamming in a little pavilion right by the entrance to campground 1 and they had banjos. Also there was drumming at the bathroom by the entrance to campground 1.

We'll be in vip too. Last year Rob didn't bring his guitar because the car was so packed. We'll try to get him to this year.

What kind of drumming? I don't know if I want to join in drumming at the bathroom!

I'll most likely have my didjeridu with me, along with various percussion instruments and maybe some other stuff.

heck yeah. I'm on a hunt for all things rare and jam. Rainsticks, steel triangle, finger symbols, whoopie cushions, tamborine, recorder (mini flute), OOOOOooo! Somebody bring a wooden Xielephone (spell?) like they have in elementary school music class! Or those wooden blocks with the ridges that you scrape with another piece of wood- does anyone know what that is called?

I know this is kinda bulky to lug to a festival, but I've been in a few drum circles with a hammer dulcimer, and it rocked!

I dont know how to spell the name of the wooden block that you scrape, but it is pronounced where-o kind of, I dont really know how to give a better example on paper, sorry

I think you're thinking of a steel drum:

here's a hammer dulcimer

I might know what you're talking about...I think there are different names for them. They're used in a lot of Brazilian music and reggae. Sometimes its just called a rasp. In Capoeira we call it a reco reco (pronounced heck-o heck-o), and it looks kinda like this:

ajones6
04-27-2005, 06:28 PM
yeah! Thanks for the pics! I would really like to see some rare instruments like these at waka. I think i could handle the reco reco. I've been looking for a washboard (think NMA) but I wouldn't electrify it, i'd use it like the reco reco

Jack,
About Hot Cross Buns... Do you know what a hot cross bun is?

RevMasterDudeCrosby

Oh, and banjo guy. What do you know when the banjo player is drooling out of both sides of his mouth?

(He's on level ground.)

No offense. I'd love to jam with a banjo. I like to sing and pick guitar and dulcimer (though my dulcimer tends to be too quiet in a crowd or with banjo or percussion). I know some bluegrass and country tunes and could try to get you to stretch your banjo with some Clancey Bros. or Husker Du or Boiled in Lead or Neil or Dylan, Dead, Floyd, blues, reggae, random originals...

I think my site is Treetop 123, but I'm getting the pass from a friend so I can't remember for sure. Anyway, if you're banjo in hand and we cross paths, I'll likely be wearing a cap cuz I'm mostly bald - short gray beard.

I will look you up and I will bring my axe.

Hey, I play bagpipes and banjo (not at the same time). I do not take offense to jokes about that, or almost anything else.

Are we less than a month away? Almost!

Jackstraw

I was jamming with this girl last night on my acoustic bass, I'm not bringing it to Waka... without an amp it gets drowned by the guitars.

RevMasterDudeCrosby
05-11-2005, 07:53 PM
I have a neighbor that plays bagpipes on his front porch regularly. Unfortunately, he plays the same three tunes over and over. It's tolerable from a distance.

Banjo and bagpipes? That's a pretty lethal combo. I tell you what, as long as you don't play the pipes between, say, midnight and 10:00 A.M. we should be able to avoid any serious violence...

Anybody out there play the accordion? Ever heard of Hamster Circus? Progressive accordion punk band. Oh, yes, it's like a good spanking!

Fuhk yeah it was during the storm... Yeah its Jon B. Remember I was one of the many people whose plush ass setup did not survive. Luckily I knew you guys down the road :) Though I couldnt beieve your giant rig didnt go airborne.

It was so sad... I had a futon mat, pillows, munchies KB, and clothes all in my tent. I was sleeping with the tent not staked to the ground when the storm went off, woke up basically to the tent bowing in the wind like crazy. I was doing great, holding the tend down from the inside, that is until the rain fly flew off :( Completely drenching me and my comfy setup. Oh well, I survived. This year I'm bringing tent stakes, and if I hear of rain I am parking my car in front of the tent to block it from the wind.

tiedyekelly
05-26-2005, 07:44 PM
I staked the crap out of the big ol 10' by 20' overhead tent.

Because, I have seen it turn into a kite at the Woody Gutherie fest.

I got a pig, home in a pen... is going through my head nonstop this morning.

tiedyekelly

Wow a hundred year thunderstorm.

I'd believe it, that was the worst storm I've weathered.

I love running into someone that survived the storm, watch their eyes, their eyes always get wide when they retale their tale of the storm.

It was freeken crazy. And I'd do it again anytime !!! Long live Waka!

tnkrbellup
06-01-2005, 12:08 AM
Heeheehee, Kelly! I hear ya, girl.....I'd do it again too! I can still see the people crazily running across the field in the downpour trying to reach their tents. Ahhh....memories!

At the time I didn't realize it was as bad as it really was. Silly me! I've lived in KS my entire life....I should know the power of storms by now  . I actually woke up before it started & made a trip to the potty before the rain hit. When our tent started leaking we moved to the tarp covered truck-bed where we sat (helllloooooo!) watching the lightening strike just yards in front of us. I was quite mesmerized by it & I hadn't even been smokin'! It was pretty dang cool. What a night for my second camping experience ever.

I'll have to admit though, this year I'm hoping for perfectly sunny 80 degree weather all weekend.....no humidity, no rain, no 70 mph winds, and NO big-ass storms at 3 am!

Let's get something happening in Tent City on Wed. night before the amps plug in for four days!

If folks want to pick a spot I can get there. I'm at Shady Lane 263 in Campground 3, but I'll ride to C1 or VIP if someone wants to jam.

I know a buttload of songs (though admittedly, many are a bit obscure) and can lend some structure in the singing and rhythm department, and do especially well if there are some good lead players, whatever the instrument. I would drool for a slippery fiddle player willing to stretch from bluegrass to punk, blues to folk, rock to reggae. I'm not picky, though, and will jam with anyone as long as the vibe is good and the energy focused enough to make us smile.

I can keep a solid beat on any hand drum. I'm bringing my djembe, maybe a frame drum and a set of bongos that I can't tune that well bud if you hit them hard enough on the edges you'll fit right in. I also have a PVC didjeridoo with beezwax covering the mouth piece. I can't play it for longer than a few seconds but I might bring it if there's room.

other than that i've been told i play a mean squeeze box

RevMasterDudeCrosby

drums and didg or cool

got great memories of realizing a didg player was droning in D and then jamming a spacewarp style acoustic morning dew with an orchestra of guitars by a lake near the Oregon Country Fair.

yeah baby

RevMasterDudeCrosby

Oh, and by the way, I would link you up to some of my sounds, but recording devices tend not to capture what I play. I mean, being one of the legion of the living dead, and just as our images do not appear in mirrors or on film, I do not \"appear\" on tape or digital recordings.

Its called a melodica, made by Hohner, as played by the late, great Augustus Pablo.

They are indeed a lot of fun for a keyboard player wandering the woods.
Pablo would jam over reggae rhythms in minor keys to get his patented \"Far East\" sound.
