There have been several questions on the board post-fest about the St. Bernards and their role at Wakarusa. Somebody didn't read their booklet at the festival!!! Well, as always, we're here to help!

Here' the text that was printed in this year's booklet:

"Have a question? Ask a St. Bernard!

The St. Bernards are a volunteer group of festival veterans and music lovers who are dedicated to providing friendly, knowledgeable assistance and quick access to information, festival officials, and emergency staff. The CENTRAL PLAINS JAMBAND SOCIETY (www.cpjs.org) is pleased to team up with New Mexico’s JAMS OF ENCHANTMENT (jamsofenchantment.com) to once again bring the St. Bernards program to Wakarusa at Mulberry Mountain.

Need a locksmith? Had too much sun too fast? Or just lost your festival program? The St. Bernards are here to help! (Barrels of whiskey, unfortunately, are not included.) Our corps of volunteers will be dispatched at information booths and will rove the festival grounds to provide information and assistance to those in need. Just look for the friendly faces in the green and decorated carts – the St. Bernards are here to make sure your weekend on top of this beautiful mountain is as enjoyable as possible.

The St. Bernards once again will provide a number of valuable services to festival-goers, including:

Centralized Information Hub: Have a question about a stage schedule change? Spot a portapotty that could use some TLC? If you have an issue or suggestion for Wakarusa’s organizers, take a minute and report your comments with a St. Bernard; we’ll make sure the information gets to the people who need to know as quickly as possible. The festival organizers can’t be everywhere on the mountain at once, so the St. Bernards act as their eyes and ears to ensure every festival-goer has as great a time as possible.

Assistance with Obtaining Medical Care: Let’s face it; while the mountain looks peaceful, there are all sorts of maladies that can bring one down. Should a friend have a bit too much delicious Boulevard Wheat in the hot, hot sun, or should you simply find yourself on the menu for mosquitoes and other critters, we’ll have direct access to medical and emergency personnel, and we’ll stay with you, our golf cart lights flashing, until the help you need arrives.

Information on Local Services: Lost your keys & need a locksmith? Car stuck in the swamp formerly known as your campsite? Luggage arrived at the airport after you did? Your trusty St. Bernards can help. Just flag us down when you see us!

CPJS, JoE, and Wakarusa are truly excited to provide the St. Bernards program at this year’s festival. Let us know if you need a hand – we’re a festival-goer’s best friend!

If you have questions, the St. Bernards have answers (or know where to find them). I like to think of us as some of the "Good Vibe Ambassadors" of the festival. Our team is experienced, knowledgeable, coherent, and ALWAYS kind. We don't do security or confrontations. We don't perform medical duties, but we do help people get the medical attention they need.


We're always looking to increase our visibility and let people know we're there to help. To be a St. Bernard, you need to KNOW a St. Bernard. Due to our assigned duties at the festival, it doesn't really work for us to take "cold volunteers" that we don't know. We've tried that in the past and found mixed results at best.

Jayhonk - always bustin chops. It's what I expect from your posts. You must derive some satisfaction from it......You must be a KU fan. (GO MIZZOU!!) If you didn't find any info you could use in this thread, you can ALWAYS ignore it and move on to the next thread. If you did learn something you didn't know, then the thread was valuable, wasn't it?

No - we aren't two weeks late. There were posts about St. Bernards pre-fest. There was a full-page spread in the festival booklet (as there has been for the past four years). This is our fifth year in operation. Many many people already knew who we were and what we did. This thread is in response to multiple questions POST-FEST about who the St. Bernards are. Those who knew - already knew. Those who didn't - know now.

I suppose it's fair to say that, while we operated under this assumption this year, we probably could've spread the word about our services even more pre-fest this year - a lot of new faces at the fest, for sure. Think that kind of got lost in our preparation frenzy (we're all volunteers with straight jobs in the "real" world, so making this thing happen each year takes a lot of work after "work"!)

We've always been reluctant to "toot our own horns", as it were (well, except for KB - he toots his own horn nightly and twice a day on weekends ), but rest assured you'll be reminded that we're there to make your fest fun quite a bit more before next year's event! Consider this your 50-week heads-up.

There are so many people that go into making St. Bernards a success every year, and I am just one of the (not so) humble few. I should have stated this in the opening thread.

Moedunk has been involved with CPJS even longer than I - he got to work the CPJS Own-Grown Stage in 04 and 05.

Then there's MindyMae (Miss Organization) and her beau Will (Chef Awesome!), and CPJSJohnny and his beautiful wife Michelle (who were the founders of CPJS almost 10 years ago)......and Critter...and Tweedy.....and over 100 other people......

We couldn't do it unless we worked as a team, and I'm lucky to be a part of one of the baddest-ass teams on the Mountain.

St. Bernards! (We need a rally/war cry.....)

Many thanks for the kind words. The support we've received from both Wakarusa and it's patrons has been overwhelmingly positive.

(And for the record, I've been known to bust chops on the reg myself.)
