Well, many have asked for some grass and we couldn't think of a better way to get you excited than to announce that San Francisco's Hot Buttered Rum will be gracing the stage of Knickerbockers on Wed. May 2nd!!! This will be an amazing night of music from some extremely talented musicians! Tickets for this 18+ event will only be $12 in advance and you can get them at all the Rad Kadillac ticket outlets. More information will be available at www.radkadillac.com. We are extremely excited about adding this show to our calendar! We hope y'all will be excited as well! This should be a great way to end the school year and get everyone juiced for SUMMERTIME! Which act uses the traditional instruments of bluegrass to express an entirely new sound, straddling the territories of blues, folk, jazz, and rock? What band has found itself spearheading the movement to ?green? the music industry? Which band's shows have become community-building events, where college kids dance hand-in-hand with baby-boomers nostalgic for the camaraderie and musicianship of the early Grateful Dead? Find the answer, and you'll become acquainted with one of the hardest-working and fastest-rising touring bands on the road today. The answer, of course, is HOT BUTTERED RUM.

The five talented young musicians who make up Hot Buttered Rum exhibit a free-wheeling, genre-bending improvisational ethos disciplined by their extensive technical training. You might say that their sound came from the mountains but moved to the city, without forgetting its high-altitude home. Call it Avant-Grass, or Mountain Americana with a funky, playful edge ? it only seems natural, considering that the players meticulously honed their chops on the mountaintops and city streets of their Northern California home before hitting the road.

The band's easy-going chemistry and friendly charisma draw an enthusiastic fan base, which is growing, fast. Playing nealy two-hundred gigs in 2006 alone, the band's dynamic live performances have created a stir all across the country. Show-stealing festival performances at a diverse series of events, including Bonnaroo, the Newport Folk Festival, Grey Fox, High Sierra and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, have only increased the rising clamor for Hot Buttered Rum's performances. The band has shared the stage with artists such as Phil Lesh, Bela Fleck, Ben Harper, Chris Thile, Mike Marshall and Peter Rowan, the last two of whom worked with the band on its most-recent, critically acclaimed studio release, Well-Oiled Machine.

But Hot Buttered Rum doesn't tour like other bands. Recognizing that each individual's actions have dramatic consequences on geo-political events and on the very health of the planet, the members of Hot Buttered Rum have chosen to hold themselves accountable to a stringent code of responsibility to the environment. Eschewing the gas-guzzling tour buses that transport most bands, Hot Buttered Rum travels in a converted passenger bus that runs on environmentally friendly vegetable oil and Biodiesel. The band has also partnered with green-minded businesses to erase the ecological footprint of their tours. Even their merchandise is produced from recycled materials. In 2006, Rock the Earth recognized the band's contributions to sustainability by nominating them for a ?Defender of the Earth? award, placing them alongside luminary leaders of the green music movement as Neil Young and Bonnie Raitt.

Hot Buttered Rum to play Knickerbockers

Long hours on the road are nothing new for touring bands. Piling gear into an old bus or van before heading out on the road is a rite of passage that members of Hot Buttered Rum are enthusiastic about embracing. But there?s something different about this five-piece Bay Area band: They want concertgoers to check out their bus as well as their music.

The band?s members are so enthusiastic about their mode of transportation that they named their most recent studio album, ?Well Oiled Machine,? in honor of it, and they?re willing to stop their shows to show it off.

What?s so special about this bus? It?s not the lavish decoration. It?s not the parties that happen onboard after every show.

It?s the fuel line.

?We?re big advocates of sustainable fuel,? said Aaron Redner, one of the band?s two fiddle players. ?It?s central to our touring philosophy.?

Hot Buttered Rum?s bus runs on biodiesel, and the band is devoted to raising awareness of alternative fuel sources, Redner said.

They?ll park their bus on O Street outside Knickerbockers on Wednesday night for a 9:30 show. It?s the first time the band has stopped in Nebraska, and Redner thinks recent ethanol initiatives in the state will make it a very interesting first experience.

Members of the band have done workshops on college campuses about the benefits of renewable fuel, and in 2006 the band was nominated for a Defender of the Earth award by Rock the Earth, a non-profit organization devoted to protecting and preserving natural resources through a partnership between the music industry and other environmental groups across the world.

The earth?s well-being is the band?s primary concern. Hot Buttered Rum recently partnered with an organic energy bar company to raise further awareness of environmental causes, such as biodiesel and renewable energy.

?We?d love to do a college campus consciousness tour to reach younger people who aren?t necessarily aware of the possibilities,? Redner said.

The members of Hot Buttered Rum all share a love of nature that?s been central to their music. The band formed on a backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevadas, a locale that still draws them when they?re not touring.

?When we?re off, that?s where we run to,? he said. ?A lot of our songs reflect our love of nature and all things green.?

That time off is getting harder to come by. The band played 180 shows in 2006 and has already toured extensively this year, drawing diverse crowds of Dead-head baby boomers and college students. Redner described the band?s sound as ?progressive Americana? which reaches beyond the scope of traditional bluegrass. In addition to major influences like the Grateful Dead ? who Redner said he grew up listening to with his father ? and Phish, he cited influences such as jazz greats Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, folk icon Bob Dylan and classical composers like Beethoven.

?I personally got pulled into the classical scene and ended up pursuing classical music all the way through a master?s degree,? he said.

Redner isn?t alone in his training. Everyone in Hot Buttered Rum studied music in college and earned a degree, he said. That wide exposure has helped the band craft a sound that combines rock, jazz and blues with traditional bluegrass stylings.

?We really love so many different kinds of music, and we try to listen to as much as possible to deepen our well,? he said.

Wednesday?s show will give the band the chance to draw from that well in its favorite surroundings: a bar in a college town.

?We play a combination of bars and art centers, so when we play a college and it?s a hit, there?s a lot of energy. That really gets us excited.?
