Default Vending Nazis back at Waka 08?

I was really let down at Waka 07 by their nazi attitude taken towards venders, namely the absolution of Shakedown Street.

Well, it appears they are letting the vendors back in this year, but have set some extravagant fees and guidelines for them to obey.

Looks like they are starting to sell-out on their vending regulations so that only Wal-Mart, Mcdonalds, and Home Depot can afford to set up a booth there.

Oh...and the.....no glass, tobacco, or drug paraphenalia policy is rather ridiculous. I can't buy a glass tobacco pipe at Waka, but I can go into town in Lawrence and get one at the local head shop. Sad.

You can't even go in to Lawrence to buy glass now. Creation Station and Third Planet are both tobacco accessory free.

I do hope they have more options as far as food vendors go. Last year seemed a little lagging in that aspect.

I'm sure if there are guidlines being set, it's to prevent fans from harassement and limit the need for law enforcers. If you want to enjoy GREAT music Wakarusa is the place to be, if your looking for glass art, there are plenty of other places to find it ~_^

while it is unfortunate that they can't just let that slide, you don't need a vendor's table to find glass at waka

that being said, it doesn't feel right without shakedown

as a vendor I can say that last year's vending was way better from our end than 2006 was. With all the stuff that happened in '06, there were lots of unhappy people which meant less sales. Also Shakedown had gotten a little out of control, I felt like I was in a third world country being hassled for drugs every few feet. I am all for barter and trade and whatever, I don't even care what folks sell as long as they are cool abour it. As for fees, they are about the middle range for the shows we are applying for. As for glass and accessories, they are always against the rules...at every show. They are often overlooked. We never took glass out because most of our glass was local so why cut in on the local guys getting to go directly to the public without paying for a booth...but now we have no accessories in store or in the whole state. The law changed, much to my fury. But the no glass policy at shows is a \"cover their ass\" policy. No point inviting extra scrutiny from the local law enforcement, 15000 hippies in the backyard of town creates enough for the cops to check into. Anyway, time will tell if '08 will be better for vending than '07 in June...see ya'll there!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that the lack of the \"scene\" kind of was missed. It adds some excitement to walking around and when there is no shakedown, ya feel like something is missing. I understand the point of view from those vendors that pay and all, but shakedown is part of the vibe of the lot.

i do miss the guy skating around on his cooler swinging sammy smith 1 for 3 or 2 for 5....that is one thing that some vendors don't do....is swing deals...that's not to say it is all of them...but try to get a coke from one of the food vendors without the correct amount of money...and you will be turned away...

back in my days of the dead and phish...we would make enough cash selling soda and GC's...that then when someone was just plain thirsty and you knew they could not afford it...we would just \"kick down\" a coke..or a grilled chesses (cheesiest in the lot...two thick slices of cheese).

anyway....it is cooperate...and they have to pay to sell...so they have to make thier money back...but...it would just be nice to see those vendors giving away a little...i mean...really...1.00 for a can of coke is pretty crazy when you can get a 24 pack at Dillions for 7 or 8 bucks. It would be nice to see more dontations to those that needed....of course I know LunaChic420 will be in full swing at the Chomp this year with alot of others from a planet that is third from the sun!!!! btw....good to see your purple self on the board!!!
